Starting taekwondo as a teenager, the most valuable thing I learned early on was simple self-defence. As women, we're raised to fear so many scenarios, so gaining the confidence that I could get out of trouble quickly, or at least defend myself and attract help was so important. It's also something that's helped me more than once as an adult.
Our instructor (Grand Master Thomas - Dural Taekwondo) knew that as teenage girls at school, the first thing we needed to learn was self-defence.
He taught us heel strikes to the face and collarbones, strikes to the shins and feet, how to get out of a headlock, what to do if someone grabbed our hair, and how to avoid being dragged into a car at all costs.
Learning to attract attention and make a scene was invaluable - we learned that even if we were overpowered, if we could make it difficult enough for an attacker, it might be the thing that saves us.
Our upcoming self-defence workshop is one I wish every child and teenager, and particularly every girl and woman could attend, and hopefully this is the first of many.
Join us on Saturday, 19th Oct from 9:30 am to 11:30 am to learn real-life, practical self-defence techniques you will remember and value for life.
Adults $20, Kids 14 & under $10, and Famiies (2 parents, 2 kids) $45.
