Coaching and or counselling (as I am learning) is about asking questions. It seems I have been coaching myself for quite a number of years because I approach most situations with questions.
These days I work on asking the best questions, which may not be the usual or default questions people often ask. For example:
Many people (including myself once) would ask "what SHOULD I do" to change x,y or z?
A better question I found was "what CAN I do". Because a plan without action is just a theory, a thought. Nothing changes without action.
But the BEST question I have found is "what CAN I do CONSISTENTLY?" Because change is simply the practice of new habits and ways of doing things until they become the new normal. There is no point starting something you know you cannot continue to do.
I am now 48 years old. I have been in the health and fitness industry for around 18 years. And I have learnt that "learning to live life in the middle" is a valuable place to spend your energy and a wonderful place to live for most people.
Doing nothing is not an option in my opinion. We have a responsibility to take care of our body and keep it healthy through movement and good food.
Doing everything is not sustainable for many and often ends in burnout (and going back to doing nothing) and comes with its own stresses which isn't healthy either.
But doing "something", over and over, every day, every week is often all that is needed to create something great.
So when you drag your arse out of bed this week with a foggy head, sore back and no energy, ask yourself the best question. "What can I do consistently" to change how I feel?
When the sun eventually comes out and stays out and you find you can’t do up the button on your shorts, ask yourself the best question. "What can I do consistently” to change this situation?
And when you gasp for air at the top of the stairs or struggle to get off the ground without assistance one day, ask yourself the best question. "What can I do consistently” to be stronger and fitter?
I think you know the answer to this question in all of these scenarios but if you don't, I am always happy to help you find them.
