I think it's fair to say my homeschooled kids had a SUPer session this week! πŸ„β€β™‚οΈ

We had perfect conditions to build strength and stamina while still having lots of fun.

"A" was like the Duracell bunny β€” there was no catching him! πŸ˜‚

"H" was recovering after a few weeks' rest following a suspected fractured elbow. Looking at him here, you'd never know he'd spent three weeks in a half cast and sling! πŸ’ͺ

Ena is a right chatterbox but is always determined to keep up with the boys! πŸ˜…

The water may still be a little cool, but "A" demonstrated a rescue jump for Ena. He actually surprised himself by completing it! πŸ˜‚ Ena gave it a go too, but wasn't keen. We'll revisit it when the water is a little warmer.

A rescue jump is a technique used to enter the water quickly while keeping your head up and your eyes on the casualty. It involves taking a large step forward into a split-leg stance and bringing your legs and arms together as you enter the water, helping you stay afloat rather than submerging deeply.

The technique is designed for rapid, safe entry when initiating a rescue, while maintaining visual contact with the person in distress. You never know when you might need to enter water to help someone, especially when you don't know the depth.

Ena also practised a self-rescue, another important element of stand up paddleboarding [SUP].

We don't just paddleboard β€” I'm teaching lifelong skills whilst having fun in the great outdoors! 😁

If you have kids who would like to join our sessions, get in touch via PM, email [email protected], or alternatively give me a call on 0458 164 138 to discuss your options.

I look forward to hearing from you! πŸ’™

Safe paddling is about more than your equipment, the weather, wind and tides.

One of the most important things to consider is the body of water you're planning to paddle, especially when delivering sessions to newcomers.

Earlier this week I met up with youth leaders from Rockhampton Presbyterian Church at their Pelican Point campsite on Callide Dam.

They’re planning to introduce kids to canoeing during their upcoming camp weekend, so we took the opportunity to revisit the location, look at water access & egress, assess the water in the paddle area and look at some of the potential hazards. It had been a while since they’d last been there. We were blessed with perfect conditions πŸ‘Œ

Matt had previously contacted me to discuss emergency procedures, risk assessment and some of the local knowledge around wind and water conditions.

Local knowledge matters. It comes from research, talking to other water users, careful observation and safe, slow exploration; entrapment and other hazards can occur on any waterway, anywhere around the world.

Knowing your paddling location before you get on the water can make your session more enjoyable, help you make better decisions and, most importantly, help keep you and your group safer.

So before you launch, take a moment to look around and ask yourself, "what could be lying beneath the water?" You might not be able to see the hazard until it’s too late! πŸ€”

If you'd like to understand more about water & weather safety don't hesitate to get in touch. PM, email [email protected], or call 0458 164 138 to discuss options.

Know your site. Know your risks. Paddle safe.

How good are these kids?! πŸ’™

Smashing out a 3km paddle, even young Ena, who is still very new to SUP, didn’t let that hold her back! πŸ’₯

Have you been looking for something a little different for your homeschoolers?

Our β€œon the water PE lessons” are a fun way for kids to get active, build confidence, develop new skills and enjoy being outdoors πŸŒŠπŸ„β€β™€οΈ

If you have kids who would benefit from some SUP based PE, drop me a PM, email [email protected], or give me a call on 0458 164 138 to chat about your options.

I’d love to hear from you! πŸ’™

It was so good to have Dave & Naomi back out on the water β€” it’s been a while!

I left Dave to his own devices for a little while to find his groove, but before he became too comfortable, I stepped in with a few corrections of his paddle technique πŸ˜†

Dave adopted the changes really quickly and was soon making great progress & learning more by challenging his new found skills & balance on a narrow race board in the boat wake πŸ‘Œ

We usually see Naomi sitting in a kayak, so this was only her second time out on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP). She absolutely smashed it, learning to stand up β€” although, typically, it was always when nobody was watching and certainly not when the camera was pointed in her direction! πŸ˜‚

SUPer well done to you both! πŸ‘πŸ‘ I’m looking forward to seeing you both back on the water again soon πŸ™

If you’ve ever thought β€œI’d love to try SUP, but I’m not sure I’m confident enough…” β€” just come give it a go!

You don’t need to be super fit, super young or super experienced. There’s no upper age limit, and SUP really can be enjoyed at all levels.

Drop me a PM, email [email protected], or alternatively give me a call on 0458 164 138 to discuss your options.

I look forward to hearing from you πŸ’™

And the "Most Improved Paddler" this week has to go to young "A" once again! An absolute 🀩

What an incredible transformation in his technical ability and paddle finesse over the last few weeks! It definitely helps having a 1:1 session β€” no older brother to wind him up and no little ones to hide behind! 😁

We had some challenging conditions, making the 1km non-stop crossing to the Dam wall hard work. But once there, "A" was allowed some free time to enjoy his favourite pastime β€” exploring & clambering around the rocks! πŸ‘Œ

The wind had picked up for the return paddle, but that didn't phase "A" at all. He's spent lots of hours learning how to deal with paddling in the wind, and it's really starting to show! πŸ’ͺ

After a rest, we headed out to a more sheltered spot to perfect his paddle technique. Practising with a pilates ball encourages correct form and allows him to slow things down and exaggerate the movements. Without having to struggle too much against the wind, it definitely helps him improve his technique πŸ‘Œ

"A" was learning about paddle placement and how to use his whole body to power his board forward πŸ’ͺ

I am SUPer proud of "A" and how he's developing in technique, strength and confidence β€” and, of course, he should be SUPer proud of himself! πŸ…

If you have homeschooled children who would like to join our sessions, why not get in touch?
