FLASHBACK FRIDAY - ATEATES

Sporting the famous colours of Neil Johnson and his Geurie-based stud, Ateates will be recalled as one of the most successful Dubbo-trained gallopers thanks to memorable two- and three-year campaigns in 2000 and 2001.

Trained by Garry Lunn, Ateates was an impressive debut winner at Wellington, before a two-length win at Canterbury, beating quality race mare Picholine – who would go on to produce Group 1 winner Rebel Raider and Group 3 winner Shamoline Warrior.

Ateates would place in both the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes and Group 3 Sweet Embrace STakes before being spelled.

Returning a stronger three-year-old, Ateates would win the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes and Group 2 Moet & Chandon Stakes, as well as finishing runner-up in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes and Group 2 Challenge Stakes and third in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes.

Ateates was transferred to Russell Cameron’s Flemington stables, where the filly contested no less than four Group 1s in four states – including the Galaxy, Goodwood, Stradbroke, and Newmarket – and winning the Group 2 Yalumba Classic along the way.

The Zeditave-mare would return to Sydney in 2002 under the care of Gary Portelli, where it would defeat Group 1 winner Viscount in the Expressway Stakes (Group 2) and contest three Group 1 sprints – the Galaxy, the Newmarket, and the Oakleigh Plate.
