Junior Striker Match reports for Round 7 (Friday June 19th)

Under 14 Boys:

Strikers u14 hosted top of the table and unbeaten MCC Hockey Section on Friday night. What a game it was. Our boys just keep getting better. The defence was under siege in the first half, but Charlie was seeing the ball like a watermelon and Will in goals was using every bit of his kit to keep numerous shots out. Ollie kept MCC honest with two beautiful goal and at half time they were down 5-2.
The second half was Bruce McAvaney “SPECIAL”. Ricks frequent intercepts started several attaching chains through Harry at centre forward whose team passing in the front quarter was brilliant. Stephen’s pressure, Ben’s running and Freddie’s darting slaps wore down MCC who were glad to hear the final whistle. The final score was 7-3 but the Strikers boys effort was summed up by an MCC parent who said “your boys just don’t give up”. Goal Scorers Oliver Fallon 2, Ben Tepper 1.

Under 16 Boys:

Round 7 Strikers vs Camberwell Hockey Club (team 2) at their home ground and the coach decided a strategy change was in order. When attacking no taking on players until in the D or your benched. Some quick play and great movement of the ball brought on the first short corner at 2min 30sec but with no score. Our first goal came at the 10min mark. The Strikers really took to the new strategy and continue to pass the ball opening up the field for another 2 goals for a 3 -0 lead at half time. The second half was similar to the first however Camberwell stepped up and took more control of the ball The Strikers worked hard to keep the ball in their attacking half. A poor pass by the Strikers gave Camberwell opportunity to score but an intense flurry of defensive manoeuvres, a quick turn over and Strikers were in control again. A further 3 goals brought the game to an end for a 6- 0 win by the Strikers. Damian got play of the match for good tackling and leading. Goal Scorers: Otto Humphris 3, Seth Christy, Jacob Mock and Damian McNamara.

Under 16 girls.

The girls U16 team produced a determined performance against Doncaster Hockey Club - Australia to secure a hard-fought 3–1 victory at the State Hockey Centre. The match began at a fast pace but Strikers took the lead within the opening ten minutes with a sensational goal by Jess Ronalds. Just before the halftime break, the girls maintained the advantage with a second goal to achieve a 2–1 lead. The second half was a showcase of outstanding defensive hockey by Ailish Furphy and Lilly Maskell, the backline denying the opposition any scoring opportunities. Hard work by Bella Newitt and Bethany Maskell on the wings and a second goal by Georgia Hazell off a short corner secured the 3-1 victory. Goal scorers Georgia Hazell 2, Jess Ronalds 1.

Under 18 mixed.

Kingston came out firing and scored what would prove to be the only goal of the game.
The Strikers worked hard throughout the match, creating multiple opportunities and trying every avenue to find an equaliser, but it just wasn't meant to be. The team came agonisingly close in the final two minutes, earning a series of short corners and applying relentless pressure, through birthday girl Monique McAskill At the other end, Asher was outstanding in goals, pulling off several saves to keep the team in the contest.
Despite the result, the Strikers showed plenty of fight and resilience. They'll have the opportunity to bounce back and redeem themselves next week when they return home.

Junior Strikers Round 6 wrap

Under 14 Boys:

The was a few nervous u14s going into tonight’s game with the prospect of the first win of their season. The boys settled quickly with the ‘electrifiying’ Tate through a lovely baseline run and jinx to secure Strikers’ first. Our defence was intimidatingly strong- led by fantastic defensive running from Steven and impeccable hand-eye from Charlie.
Following halftime, the boys held all the momentum. Jaya was a force to be reckoned with, scoring goals number 2 and 3, effectively settling racing hearts on the sidelines. Malachi’s goal was the icing on the cake to secure a ripping 4-0 win over Knox Hockey Club for Striker’s first win of the season.

Under 16 girls:

The Under 16 girls showed tremendous determination in an exciting 4–4 draw against Mornington Peninsula Hockey Club
The opposition came out strongly, scoring two quick goals to take an early lead. Strickers responded well with a goal by Alexis Hazell before halftime to trail 2–1 at the break.
The second half was just as intense as Strikers scored again to level the match at 2–2, but the opposition regained control with two more goals, opening up a 4–2 advantage.
With only five minutes remaining, Georgia Hazell produced a brilliant individual run, weaving through defenders before finishing superbly to reduce the deficit to 4–3 and give the team renewed belief.
In a dramatic finish, Strikers earned a short corner on the final whistle, which the team executed perfectly to score the equaliser and complete a remarkable comeback. The match finished 4–4, with the girls showing great teamwork and a fighting spirit to earn the draw. 3 goals by Georgia Hazell earned her the coaches award this week with the whole team once again congratulated by the opposition for an enjoyable match and show of quality sportsmanship.
Under 16 Boys:

What a night WGHA Strikers played against Toorak East Malvern Hockey Club - TEMHC
Strikers went up early with their first goal scored from a short. It was a hard-fought game with great play from both teams. Mr B saying the strikers' team were playing "pretty" at half time with a 4-1 lead. For the second half the Strikers team kept playing pretty the second half, and they won 7-1, with a special mention to the TEM goalie at working hard and playing well. To the shock of his Mum, Jacob Mock got a green card for an unfortunate hitting the ball away after a whistle. Tyler Boltong got player of the week for his fantastic ball skills on the field tonight.
When the team plays well together, individuals are able to shine, the goals scorers for the game are Tyler, Damian McNamara and Jayden "Postmaster" Ronalds for one each and Flynn Furphy and Otto Humphris for two each.

Under 18 Mixed:

The Gippsland Strikers U/18’s took on Knox away on Friday night. Strikers came out flat with a capital FLAT. Whether it was the week off or the late game, nobody will ever know, but the Strikers looked a step behind early on despite controlling the scoreboard.
Even without finding their best hockey, the Strikers managed to build a 3–0 lead by halftime. While the scoreline looked comfortable, there was a sense that the team had plenty more to give.
The second half was a completely different story.
The goals came thick and fast as the visitors piled on eight more in a relentless display of attacking hockey.
By full time, the scoreboard reflected the Strikers' second-half dominance, with an emphatic 11–0 victory over Knox.

Junior Strikers Round 5 wrap:

Under 14 Boys

What an exciting match this was. Against the highly fancied Mentone Hockey Club, Strikers kept their defensive structure and kept the score to nil all for most of the half before Mentone scored two in the last 15 minutes to go in 2/0 up at halftime. Rick and Charlie were nearly impassable with their pressure and wide defensive clears time and again stopping attacks. Harry was instrumental in setting up some strong forward play.

The Strikers were more attacking in the second half and created several opportunities to score. Of particular note was Jaya’s hard running and Freddie’s sublime pass to Ben in the defensive half allowing him to run it into the D and narrowly missing. Our captain Stephen led from the front with his strong attack on the ball and repeated efforts. The final score was 2-0. Mentone won’t be looking forward to playing us on our home turf later this year.

Under 16 Boys

A quick penalty corner in the match between the Strikers and Southern United Hockey Club set the tone at Bellbird Park. The teams were relatively even and pressure was on from both sides of the field. Jayden Ronalds scored the first goal for the Strikers, shortly followed up with a fantastic save by Flynn Furphy to keep Southern United from levelling the score. A goal from Seth Christy put the Strikers clearly ahead at half time 2 - 0. Play resumed and there were many attempts at the goals keeping the umpires busy, while a sneaky pass from Damian McNamara to Seth to score his 2nd giving the Strikers a commanding lead. Southern United didn't make it easy but Tyler Boltong and Jacob Mock were also able to score incredible goals, the spectators responding in turn with some loud cheering. The game had a number of penalty corners, but the Strikers were not being able to fully capitalise. A solid 5-0 win for the Strikers on their home ground.

Under 16 girls.

Friday night, the Strikers U16s girls team travelled to Cheltenham to take on Southern United Hockey Club. The team started strong, with some great midfield support offered by Jess Ronalds. Halfway through the first half, Lilly Maskell delivered the team's first goal, easing the nerves and settling the group. Shortly after, another goal was scored by Georgia Hazell, with a fantastic assist by Isla Ronalds. Going into half-time, the Strikers' defence continued to be strong and saved many attempts. The second half saw a late surge by Southern, with a quick goal, but this was answered by Strikers with a penalty stroke awarded to the captain, Alexis Hazell, who delivered another goal. With the score 3-1 going into the last few minutes, both teams played excellent hockey. Strikers winning the match, with the coach's award going to a well-deserving Hannah Brandon.

Under 18 mixed

On what felt like a very unusual game night, the Gippsland Strikers U/18s took the field against Camberwell Hockey Club with something they haven't had much of this season, a full team and two subs.

A big thank you to Flynn Furphy and Jacob Mock from the U/16s for filling in.

Perhaps the highlight of the night came from one of the Strikers players, who provided a very simple explanation for how the game was unfolding: "Their sticks are too long." While the coaching staff may have had a few more technical observations, it was hard to argue with such a clear and confident assessment.

Despite a multitude of missed opportunities and some outstanding saves from the Camberwell goalkeeper, the Strikers came away with a convincing 9–0 victory.

Goal scorers were Ronan North 2, Hamish Zurrer 2, Will Callanhan 2, Deakin Boltong 1, Leandra McLaughlan 1, Charlotte Smith 1

Round 4 Junior Strikers Wrap

Under 18s mixed

On a cold and chilly night 9 players clothed in green took to the field against the red and black of Southern United. It didn’t take long for the Gippslanders to strike through a smooth Smithy goal. The half field press was just as the coach commanded and it opened the flood gates allowing the strikers to go into half time with a 5-0 lead. With no half time snacks due to a team manager blunder the team took to the field for the second half thinking they might pass out from mal nourishment but that was not the case, they defied the WHO by coming out and scoring another 7 goals in the second half. Deacon got man of the match for a beautiful cricket shot that would have made his father proud. Final score was 12-0. Goals scored by Leandra McLaughlan 4, Charlotte Smith 3, Will Callanan 3 and Isaac Graziotin 2.

Under 16 girls

Despite the 2–0 result, the Under 16 Girls put in a determined performance throughout the match. The team showed excellent effort from the first whistle to the last, working hard for each other and never giving up against a strong opposition. Defensively, the girls played effortlessly under pressure, with several strong tackles and intercepts to keep the game competitive. Excellent work by Isla, Hannah and Bella in attack, moving the ball well and showing great teamwork, resulting in some amazing shots at goal. While the scoreboard didn’t fall our way this time, the players should be proud of their commitment, resilience, and positive attitude - which received praise from the umpire and opposition team manager. Congratulations to Bella, who received the coaches award this week and well done girls on your effort and great sportsmanship.

U16 Boys Pennant Round 4 took us back to Melbourne. An inner city pitch surrounded by high rise apartments. This week we face off against MCC and for the Strikers it might be have a tough challenge with 3 players down compared to our opponents starting with four on the bench. We did manage to wrangle an extra from U14s who have a bye this week. Boom, early goal, worked down the right side and a pass across the face of goals, quick tap in by newly named Postmaster Jayden. Some back and forth and Tyler found himself top of the D directly in front and buries the ball in the net. MCC responded quickly with a break away fast moving down the pitch, only the goalie to defend. Clean play and goal by MCC. A few Penalty corners in our favor later in the first half but no conversions to goals. The first half continued with lots of back and forth taking us into half time finishing on a PC, but again no score

Second half started with MCC bolting out the gate and made sure their intentions were know and got and early goal. Not to leave anything unanswered Striker respond quickly with booming ball across the goals and nicely deflected in by Jacob M. Both teams seem evenly matched with the ball move both directions up and down the field. This certainly had some scrappy play with MCC crowding the D when defending, however with good support, Damian was able to find a gap and get one through to the back of the goals. One questionable call giving a Strikers player a green card. With a player down they mounted strong defence and did not allow MCC any sort of late charge. The game finished on PC again no goal, something I'm sure the coach will want to work on in our next training session End score 4 to 2 in favour of the Strikers.

Round 3 Strikers (Juniors) wrap.

Under 14 boys

The Under 14 boys were back on the road against Hawthorn Hockey Club. With no subs they knew it would be a hard game and Hawthorn came out strong leading 3-0 at half time. The boys could have dropped their heads but that was not the case with a dominating 2nd half with two early goals to Ollie Fallon and Billy Ronalds. It would have been 3-3 if the post didn’t get in the way but then Hawthorn steadied a ripping goals to run out 4-2 winners.

Under 16 girls

A tough home match for the U16 girls up against Casey Hockey Club for round 3 but we certainly held our own. 0-0 for the first 20 minutes then two goals for Casey from short corners just before half time. Striker’s defence in the second half remained strong with excellent work by Liv West and goal keeper Lilly Cutler, who also received the coach’s award this week. The final score was a loss at 3-0 but each player kept up a 100% effort all the way through. A winning performance by a new team still coming together, with a warm welcome to our two new members Hannah and Bella! Well done!!

Under 16 boys

Round 3 at the State Hockey Centre brought about some serious excitement and energy with plenty of pre-game noise in the change rooms. Strikers came out firing, showing good balls skills, passing, tackling for a 2 - 0 score at half time even with an unusual 2 green cards against Strikers player at the same time for the same tackling offence. In the second half both teams showed continued intensity with Frankston Hockey Club defending well with plenty of penalty corners against them. Strikers showed strong form even with no bench and a player short on the field gaining another two goals finishing 4-0. Goals scorers, Jayden, Tyler, Damian and Jacob M

Under 18 mixed

Gippsland Strikers came onto the pitch on Friday night a little disillusioned, knowing they only had 8 players against a Frankston Hockey Club side with 14 strong, athletic players who looked ready to dominate the game. However, looks can be deceiving, because words like grit, determination, and tenacity perfectly described the Strikers performance.
Frankston struck first, but Strikers responded brilliantly to level the scores before half time at 1-1. It was here that Frankston began to realise that this determined group of 8 was more than up for the challenge and were not going to back down. Through relentless hard work, teamwork, and pure persistence, they fought to score another two outstanding goals to secure an incredible victory.
It was a performance full of heart and a night the Strikers can be incredibly proud of.
The night also marked an exciting moment for the team, with new goalie Asher taking the field for his very first game.
Final score was 3-2 with goals scored by Hamish Zurrer 2, and Will Callanan.
