Rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the West Gippsland Under 16 Boys as they ran out under the bright lights of the new hockey field at Elgar Park for Friday night's Pennant South East Grand Final against the undefeated Camberwell Hockey Club.
The Strikers started strong, earning an early short corner that sailed just past the post. Camberwell responded quickly with a goal at the other end. The Strikers fought back with two close opportunities to equalize—so close that the large crowd could hardly believe they missed.
Up front, Seth Christy pressed relentlessly to create opportunities, while the back line of Joshua Cooling, Jacob Mock, and Tyler Boltong defended furiously. Despite their efforts, West Gippsland went into the half-time break trailing 2-0.
Camberwell ramped up the pressure in the second half, scoring twice more to extend their lead. However, the Strikers kept fighting, and Jacob Mock snuck a goal in to make the score 4-1. Whispers of a regular-season comeback, where the Strikers scored three goals in five minutes against this same team, rippled through the faithful supporters. Unfortunately, time ran out, and Camberwell added one last goal to finish the match 5-1.
While the scoreboard didn't go their way, the West Gippsland boys proved to be incredibly worthy runners-up for the 2026 season. They went toe-to-toe with a powerhouse Camberwell side that was undefeated all year.

Semi-Finals Showdown

West Gippsland Strikers had two teams in the Semi Finals last night (Friday).

The Under 16 boys were up against their biggest rivals in Casey Hockey Club

Casey got off to a flying start, scoring the first goal of the night. But the Strikers quickly came back refusing to let the early setback slow them down. It was a hard-fought battle from start to finish, with both teams working tirelessly for possession. There was plenty of running, some amazing ball skills and plenty of pressure on the field.

The sidelines were just as energetic, with plenty of noise from the supporters and a coach pacing up and down with hands on his head! The suspense was real. Half-time: Strikers 3–1.

The second half saw the Strikers fighting hard to keep the ball in their attacking end, while Casey put up a gallant effort to stay in the contest. With 15 minutes gone, Casey had scored again and the Strikers were grimly holding onto their 3-2 lead.

Then, with just seven minutes to go, Casey won a stroke and some people in the crowd felt like they were having a stroke. Josh Cooling came up with an amazing defensive effort, denying the goal and keeping the Strikers in control.

The save gave the Strikers the lift they needed and they finished out the game defending strongly but also attacking when possible which resulted in final goal with just seconds on the clock.

A 4-2 victory was the result.

A fantastic team effort, plenty of heart and a well-earned spot in the final. Go Strikers!

Goals: Flynn Furphy, Jayden Ronalds, Otto Humphris & Seth Christy.

The Under 18s headed to Frankston Hockey Club for the second week in a row for their semi final playoff.

Strikers had a wobbly start to the game and Frankston capitalised scoring the first 2 goals, but the Strikers settled and scored a hard fought goal by Will Callanan, which sent us into halftime down 2-1.

Tenacious was Strikers attitude in the second half, with Will levelling the game with a stroke.

With some incredibly controversial calls by the umpires and some strange tagging techniques by Frankston they took the game 4-2.

The whole Strikers team should be incredibly proud of their great sportsmanship and attitude on the night.

It’s FINALS TIME! 🔥

Our Under 16 Boys are at home against Casey Hockey Club this Friday night, and the last time these two locked horns it finished in a heart-stopping draw. Will we get a dramatic shootout under the lights… or will the Strikers dig deep, get the job done in regular time, and punch their ticket straight into the Grand Final? There’s only one way to find out. 🕖 Push-back 7pm sharp – be there early and bring the noise!

Meanwhile the Under 18s are locked in a proper heavyweight Semi Final against Frankston Hockey Club at the Peninsula Hockey Centre (8pm). One-goal win, one-goal loss across the regular season… this one’s balanced on a knife edge and you just know it’s going to be an absolute war.Two massive games. Two chances to keep the dream alive.

Let’s get behind our juniors and roar them into the Grand Final! 💪

We are all saddened to hear of the passing of player Robin Fitzpatrick.

Rob was a longtime member of our Strikers women’s Vic League team playing 120 games in Bulls’/Strikers’ colours, and also played with Strikers masters for many years on Monday nights.
