Welcome all players. Annual subscription fee is $5 with a $2 fee weekly. Tea and coffee and tea provided.

The 2024 begins with another remarkable result for our cozy chess club. Like in the previous year, one of our club members, at his first ever FIDE rated competition, stepped into the illustrious Begonia Chess Tournament hosted in the remote city of Ballarat. Regardless of the hot weather Ross kept himself cool and delivered an incredible performance, leaving the audience speechless with his quick but precise style.

After finishing undefeated in the first tournament day, he shocked the crowd by winning a full point against a Candidate Master (rated 1950+), gaining him the prestigious opportunity to face the top 20 seeds for two games in a row. He eventually ended the tournament with 4.5 points out of 7, which guaranteed him the award as Best Begonia Unrated Player (in the world?!)

Dear chess players,

I am delightful to announce you that another tournament is about start.
According to an incredible amount of requests, we decided to change the flavour of this competition and, instead of the Classical format, we will navigate the turbulent skies of a Rapid Swiss tournament.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT:

Each player will have to manage 30 minutes, for the whole game, plus 20 seconds increment per move; play 5 games (one each week), and try to climb the ladder to win a magnificent award.
During the first three rounds a player who is not able to participate can ask for an half point bye, while in the last two rounds the bye will worth zero points.

The tournament will start on Monday 10th of July.
The games start at 7:30 p.m.

All the registrations will be taken in person up to 15 minutes before the starting of the first round.

If you cannot play all the rounds, it is not a problem. Just let us know ( on Facebook or email ) and we will easily accomodate all your needs.

Almost one month after the finish of the Begonia Chess Tournament, here, in Drouin, there are two young chess players who are still celebrating since they came back from Ballarat.
Isaac and David, both at their very first rated chess competition, reached the first position in the unrated section of the tournament, with the admirable score of 3.5 points out of 7.

Congratulations!!

Matteo also having a strong performance, ending with 4 points out of 7 to secure the strongest showing for the club! Awesome job!

The first event of the season is coming!

Monday 30th of January we open our 2023 Chess calendar with the 'Summertime Classic' Tournament.
It's a 5 rounds Swiss tournament that will be run every Monday until the 27th of February. If you cannot play all the games, no worries, 3 half points bye can be assigned in the first 3 rounds of the tournament - just let us know.

The winner of the tournament, the most creative and the most precise players will be personally awarded by the Club President, and their glory will be immortalised by a post on our popular page.

Don't miss this opportunity and remember: The venue has been temporary moved to the building adjoining the Senior Citizens Centre that hosts a radio station. As usual, in Oak street, Drouin.

The clocks will start at 7:15 pm..... see you there at 7 pm sharp for tournament registration!

♟CHESS tournament reminder: Attention to our beloved Chess players!!

🕰The 57th Begonia Open Chess Tournament is coming up! It will be held in Ballarat over the Victorian Labour Day long weekend ‪from 11th to 13th March 2023‬.....so save the date! ✅

We enthusiastically encouraged all the players to join this beautiful tournament that, the last year, collected more than 150 Chess Player entries from all over the country.

♟The tournament will be both ACF and FIDE rated, with three different sections (Open, under 2000 and unrated). So even beginners are very welcome to participate and try to get one of the two prizes listed for the unrated section.

Entries and payments can be completed online via the TryBooking link (https://www.trybooking.com/CEEGE )This is the only way which you may enter the tournament.
(📍Note: PAYMENT MUST BE MADE PRIOR TO ATTENDING THE EVENT)

This is where entries can be followed as well as results and pairings during the tournament.

🏡If you require accommodation, we encourage you to discuss it with other players at the club ( there are already some players interested in finding a shared solution), and do make sure you book something as soon as possible since it is always a very busy time in Ballarat during the Begonia Festival period.

Looking forward to seeing a good turn out of players from the Gippsland area in attendance.
