Trainer Stu’s favourite workout is the Bill Starr 5x5 program
Bill Starr may be a bit of a throwback, but his influence in widespread. Starr was an Olympic weightlifter in the 1960s, becoming a prolific strength coach, author of several successful programs, and writer for numerous publications.
There have been a number of variations of the 5x5 program that have been surface over the years but the basic program was centred around 3 lifts – Squat, Bench Press and Power Clean – and 3 different intensity schemes (low, medium, high), over 3 days, using 5 set x 5 reps for each exercise.
Stu’s favourite way to approach his week involved 3 days of strength training, focusing of 3-5 lifts in each session applying the 5x5 method. It is an effective way to keep the session simple and time effective.
