It is with great sadness that the Dorrigo Rifle Club acknowledges the passing of one of our most valued members and mate, Piers Hammick, who passed away at Dorrigo Hospital on 17 March, aged 71.
Piers joined the club in May 2021 and quickly became a much-loved part of our community. Drawn in by the sound of the range from his home on Parkes Street, he embraced club life with enthusiasm, humour, and a strong sense of mateship.
He lived a full and fascinating life, working across the world in fields ranging from anthropology to oil and gas, mineral prospecting, and tour guiding in central Australia. He was a great storyteller, a passionate conversationalist, and never short of an opinion, which he was always happy to share over a post-shoot lunch.
At the club, Piers was one of our hardest workers and most dedicated contributors. From maintaining the range (climbing trees without fear!) and preparing targets, to supporting new shooters through training and safety courses, he gave his time generously. He was also our “greenest” member, always mindful of environmental impact and keen to improve our practices.
Above all, Piers was a loyal mate. He showed up, pitched in, and made the club a better place for everyone… and did it all with the best sense of humour.
He will be greatly missed by all of us at DRC and remembered fondly for years to come.
Funeral:
Graveside service at Dorrigo Cemetery
2:00pm, Friday 27 March
Followed by a wake at 14 Parkes Street, Dorrigo
Club Remembrance:
We will honour Piers at the range on 29 March with a minute’s silence and a single shot. A working bee and BBQ will follow, just as he would have liked.
Vale Piers, you will be so missed.
