Reset In 5

Digital Detox time!

Time to turn off your phone, device, or watch or switch them to silent mode and put on "do not disturb".

Take a moment to simply "Be", and begin by noticing all the objects around you.

What are they? Trees or plants outside, pets, or objects on your desk? Perhaps a view in the distance?

Notice their shape, colours, & textures. What else are you aware of?

Turning your attention to your feet (yes).

What do they feel like? What are they on or connected to? What other sensations are you aware of? The sensation of them being in shoes, on carpet or the floor? It's Ok if you can not sense anything, simply be aware of that.

Place, gently your hand on your belly, noticing any rise and fall or internal sounds and movements.

When you're ready, allow yourself to come back to the here and now, go for a walk or get up and stretch before going back to whatever it was that you were doing.

Reset In 5 Moment - Touch

Time for a 5 Minute Reset.

So, taking a moment, notice what you may be touching right now.

What are you noticing about the surface or object you may be holding? Textured, smooth or a combination? Perhaps allowing yourself to notice how it's shape feels to touch?

If you are not holding or touching anything, perhaps take a moment to notice how your body feels against the surface that you are sitting on? Standing on? Notice the pressure of your body or feet.

Perhaps it's the sensation of clothing against your skin? Is it soft or heavy? Does feel nice or unpleasant?

What else are you aware of? Take a moment to notice one thing about surface, object or sensation, simply notice.

Youโ€™ve probably seen Loop. Itโ€™s the Pixar short about two kids stuck in a canoe, one of them a non-speaking autistic girl named Renee. Hereโ€™s the part that usually gets left out.

Pixar didnโ€™t cast a speaking actress to perform as non-speaking. They cast Madison Bandy, who is autistic and non-speaking herself.

Then they changed how they work. Instead of asking her to perform on cue in a recording booth, the team built the process around her, capturing her real vocalizations in a setting where she was comfortable, and letting her lead what the character sounded like.

Reneeโ€™s voice isnโ€™t an impression of an autistic girl. Itโ€™s an autistic girl.

Most studios ask disabled actors to fit the process. This one changed the process to fit the actor.

When your child needs extra support, itโ€™s easy to put yourself last.

Your time.

Your energy.

Your wellbeing.

Not because theyโ€™re failing.

Because parenting in these circumstances requires a ๐™๐™ช๐™œ๐™š emotional investment.

Looking after yourself isnโ€™t selfish.

It helps you keep showing up for the people you love most.

Noise, questions, demands, emotions.

You live in constant sensory overload.

Your brain rarely gets a quiet moment.

Closing your eyes and breathing slowly for even a few seconds can help your nervous system step out of high alert mode.

Itโ€™s not a full break.

But itโ€™s enough to soften the tension that builds throughout the day.

And sometimes that tiny reset is all you need to keep going.

Try this today when the noise starts to feel overwhelming.

Reset In 5 Moment - Smell

Yes, it's time for a 5 Minute Reset.

Sometimes, we forget to notice this particular sense, and every so often, it's a lovely way to ground ourselves.

So, take a moment, notice what you may be able to smell in the air around you.

What are you noticing? Perhaps there is no smell at all, or a variety of smells?

Perhaps it's on the clothing that you are wearing? Perfume? Is it soft or strong? Does feel nice or unpleasant?

What else are you aware of? Take a moment to notice one thing about that smell, simply notice.

What parents are saying.......

To teachers.
To family members.
To other parents.
To strangers in public.

Many parents of neurodivergent kids become their childโ€™s interpreter for the world.

You explain behaviour.
You explain sensory needs.

You explain reactions that others may not understand.

That advocacy is powerful.
But it can also be exhausting.
You deserve spaces where you donโ€™t have to explain everything.

If youโ€™d like to be part of a community where people already understand, join the waitlist for The Reset Circle. Link in comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

Many parents navigating a new diagnosis carry a huge amount of guilt.

You question your decisions.

You replay moments.

You wonder if you could have done something differently.

But parenting a neurodivergent child is complex and demanding.

You are learning.

You are adapting.

That matters more than perfection ever could.

If this spoke to you, save it for the hard days.
