With just two more rounds of the Wimmera Hockey Association’s regular season remaining, ten of the twelve finalists across the three competitions are confirmed; however, there are still several stories to be played out before the semi-finals begin.

It was a big day at Yanac on Saturday with a full round of matches and the host club’s ‘Back to Yanac Hockey Club’ function in the evening that was attended by more than 150 current and former club members, opponents and several well-known Wimmera hockey identities.

It was a big day of hockey at Yanac on Saturday with a full round of matches and the host club’s ‘Back to Yanac Hockey Club’ function in the evening that was attended by more than 150 current and former club members, opponents and several Wimmera hockey identities.

The fields were in excellent condition considering the state they were left in after a very wet day of hockey for round six back in the middle of June and the forecast rain held off until after the last game, which all contributed to some intense and skilful hockey, but despite the finals looming in three weeks, few of the results gave much insight into what to expect later in the season.

The Yanac Tigers have moved back into outright favouritism for the Open title after a comfortable victory over their closest rival, the Warrack Hoops. These teams have been locked in to meet again in the semi-finals for several weeks now, and with the Warrack team missing a couple of key players on this occasion, it is anticipated that their next meeting will be much closer.

The battle to fill the remaining two semi-final places remains the same as it was before the round, as all three teams vying for these places earned two points each; the Horsham Hurricanes and Nhill Ranges from a scoreless draw and the Kaniva Cobras for the bye. They all remain in the running to play finals with just four points separating them, promising some tough encounters over the next two weeks.

The results in the Women’s matches reveal that Yanac has moved marginally ahead of the Dimboola Roos in the race for the minor premiership, after a big win over Warracknabeal, while the Roos had to work hard for their narrow win over Kaniva. Not much can be read into this as their opponents were of a significantly different standard, so these two remain on par with each other and as they remain on the same points, only separated by goal difference, their meeting next week should decide which will top the ladder at the end of round fifteen.

The Nhill Thunderbirds removed any doubt that they will play finals after defeating the Horsham Jets, who went into the game with an outside chance of remaining in the race for the top four, but can now no longer make it even if they win their two remaining games.

The logjam at the top of the Under 16 ladder remains, with three teams still within reach of finishing on top, although the Nhill Leopards are currently in the prime position after defeating the Horsham Bombers.

In the other games, the Kaniva Raiders moved into second after overcoming the Dimboola Kangaroos, and the Yanac Warriors are still in with a chance of a top two finish after defeating the Warrack Revengers.

Players and spectators enjoyed some welcome sunshine after a frosty start at Kaniva today for round twelve of the Wimmera hockey season, and the ladders are taking shape with several teams already locking in their place in the finals, and several others now know they cannot make it, but there are still positions to be decided in all three competitions over the last three rounds.

The only team to change their position on the Open ladder after this round was the Nhill Rangers, who gained two points from a bye and moved up to third place, after the two teams now below them both were defeated.

The Yanac Tigers defeated the Kaniva Cobras to stay on top of the ladder, and the Warrack Hoops overcame the Horsham Hurricanes to lock in a top-two finish.

With three rounds remaining, the top two are set in first and second places respectively, and when they play each other next week the Hoops could draw equal on points, but the Tigers’ superior goal difference will almost certainly see them finish on top regardless of the result. Despite this, any psychological advantage gained by either team could be valuable when they meet again in the finals

The remaining three teams will continue to battle it out for the last two places in the top four, and while the Rangers and Cobras are currently in the best positions, the Hurricanes are still in with a chance to displace one of them.

The biggest result from round twelve was Warracknabeal Women earning their first points for the season with a scoreless draw with the Horsham Jets, with the other two results reflecting current ladder positions.

While these two teams are now out of contention for the finals, the most interest now focuses on the battle for the minor premiership.

The leading two teams entered the round locked together on both points and goal difference, and after the Dimboola Roos defeated the Nhill Thunderbirds by four goals and Yanac defeated Kaniva by 3, they remain on the same points, with Dimboola now just ahead with a one goal better goal difference.

Kaniva has now confirmed they will finish in third place and the Thunderbirds cannot move from fourth.

The order on the Under 16 ladder remains fluid after the Nhill Leopards defeated the Dimboola Kangaroos to remain on top, and the Warrack Revengers are hot on their heels after a win over the Horsham Bombers. The third-placed Kaniva Raiders and fourth-placed Yanac Warriors played out a scoreless draw but are still within reach of a top two finish if either team above them were to falter.

The Bombers are now out of the race for the finals, and the Kangaroos would need a very unlikely combination of results to go their way if they were to rise up the ladder.

Wimmera Hockey Association - Round Eleven

Another cool, dewy morning greeted players at Anzac Park in Warracknabeal on Saturday for round eleven of the Wimmera hockey season. While the damp conditions influenced play in the early matches, the teams soon adapted, and some top hockey was played throughout the day.

- - Open - -

The two leading teams in the Open competition drew a little further ahead of the rest of the field with the first-placed Yanac Tigers defeating the Nhill Rangers by four goals to one, and second-placed Warrack Hoops holding on for a one-goal win over the Kaniva Cobras.

The two victorious teams are now assured of playing finals, but the other three teams are only separated by two points, guaranteeing some intense hockey over the coming weeks as three battle for two places in the finals.

- - Women - -

As with the Open results this week, the leading two Women’s teams enjoyed comfortable wins which have locked them into the finals. Yanac defeated the Nhill Thunderbirds by five goals, and the Dimboola Roos overcame the Horsham Jets by eight. This combination of results has Yanac and the Roos tied on top of the ladder, on equal points, and identical goal difference, with the Ross just ahead with a marginally better percentage. Either could claim the minor premiership, with their next meeting in the second last round possibly where it will be decided.

Kaniva had to work hard against Warracknabeal to win by six goals, but it was enough to ensure that they will also play finals.

The Thunderbirds are in fourth place, ten points and a significant goal difference ahead of the Horsham Jets, who will now struggle to challenge for a place in the finals, and Warracknabeal are eight points further back.

- - Under 16 - -

The top four teams in the Under 16s shuffled places again this week, with the Nhill Leopards rising to the top after a solid win over the Yanac Warriors, who dropped to fourth. The Kaniva Raiders moved from fourth to third with a one-goal win over the Warrack Revengers, who slipped from first to second.

Only six points separate these four teams, and with sixteen points still on offer and all capable of beating one another in this group, the final order is far from settled.

The Horsham Bombers earned their second win for the season by defeating the Dimboola Kangaroos, and while both teams are out of the running for the finals, they could still influence the final ladder positions of those above them.
