Ahoy there sailors, land lubbers and those who can feel the spray on their faces from their arm chairs at home! It's time to locate that left glove you swore you put somewhere safe, pour that half tonne of sand out of your boots and prepare yourselves…
🏆 The Lachlan Tunks Trophy Race is ON tomorrow! 🏆
That means:
Serious faces at the start line 😐
Extremely tactical discussions that sound suspiciously like arguing,
And someone definitely forgetting which mark we’re rounding....
Whether you're in it to win it or just in it to not hit anything expensive, it’s going to be an amazing day on the water.
⛵🌟 Also happening: Beginners Sail Training – Session 5! 🌟⛵
That’s right — Session 5!
By now our beginners:
Know which rope does what (mostly)
Can confidently say “starboard!” with authority
And only occasionally sail in the wrong direction (though in all fairness, don't we all ?!)
If you’ve been thinking about giving sailing a go, come down and see what all the fuss is about. We promise fresh air, big smiles, and only mild confusion!
Now on a more serious note, here is a taste of the wonderful history, and name sake of tomorrow's race:
Lachlan Tunks Trophy Race
Lachlan Tunks and his family were members of Deviot Sailing Club from 1976 until his untimely
death in 1982. Lachlan was introduced to sailing at the age of 10 when his father built a Mirror
dinghy, Hunny, to sail at Deviot. It soon became his favourite sport and he was quick to take over the helm from his Dad and sailed many races over the years with his sister Rachel as crew. His dad, Robin, was soon helping out with driving one of the pickup boats every weekend
of the sailing season. Sailing at Deviot was a “must” for Lachlan. He hated to miss a weekend at Deviot (a rare occurrence). Deviot Sailing Club provided him not only an opportunity to get out on the water and race, but also he and his family made great friends at the sailing club and he enjoyed spending time with them. He was quite successful, winning the club junior championship, and in 1981 he won the junior division and the overall handicap prize of the
McIntyre cup. The Tunks family previously donated the painting of the view of the club that was
so well known and loved by Lachlan for the Club’s Mirror Championship award. Lachlan’s family are very happy to see Deviot Sailing Club continues to honour his memory with this trophy race.
The race is a continuous laps format with the trophy awarded on progressive handicap result.
See you on the water! 🌊⛵
