As we head into this Saturday, we first take a moment to acknowledge ANZAC Day — a time to reflect, remember, and honour the service and sacrifice of those who came before us.
With that spirit of respect and community, we’ll also be gathering for our final sail of the season ⛵
Join us for one last hit-out on the water as we wrap up a great season at Deviot Sailing Club. There may even be a chance to squeeze in some Autumn Pennant resails (weather permitting) — full details will be shared at the briefing on the day.
After sailing, stick around, warm up, and enjoy a relaxed evening together — don’t forget to bring a casserole dinner to share 🍲
Let’s make it a great send-off to the season — good sails, good company, and hopefully a kind breeze to finish us off in style!

Ahoy There Sailors and all you Buoys & Gulls who are support crews or follow along from home.

Apologies for the late post, but hopefully a few of you have been getting social at Da Club tonight.

Tomorrow sees our second last sailing Saturday of the season, and what Saturday it will be.

Crews will be contesting the Peter Brooks Trophy, as well as there being resail provisions.

A little more about Peter Brooks:
This season marked 50 years since Peter’s passing while sailing at Deviot.

This race is conducted in memory of Peter Brooks who tragically drowned during a club event at Deviot in the 1975. This is a handicap event for all entrants, with everyone sailing the same course and competing for a single trophy. This event may use the continuous laps format.

Tony Brooks (Peter’s older brother) provided the following:
Peter began his sailing around the age of 14 with local identities Keith Larner and Keith Darcey who both owned small sailing boats at Deviot. As time progressed he purchased Gwen 12 in kit form and in quick time it was completed and regularly sailed in the Deviot Spring Bay area. In the very early sixties sailing was becoming popular and a group got together to form the Deviot Sailing Club and of course Peter was a founding member. Many working bees were held, land cleared and clubrooms established. Membership grew and the club adopted the Enterprise class as their sailing dinghy. Peter set up a group of about 6 and they all worked together building their own boats in a large shed at his parent’s house. Sailing all summer seasons over the years with club success he also participated in the National Enterprise Championships in Sydney around 1972 and came home the Australian Enterprise champion.
Sadly in October 1975 whilst sailing a Laser at Deviot a South Easterly gale came in and boats capsized all over the bay. Peter wearing a weight belt, not a strong swimmer and an asthma sufferer did not make it. He was 32 years old. Even after 50 years we still miss him.

The below photo of Peter from the Examiner came from Roger Orr’s archives.

We wish all sailors competing tomorrow fair winds and following seas and remind everyone that whether you're sailing, supporting, or spectating, that the weather is heading quickly into wintry territory so dress warmly/ have warm clothes to change into after you sail.

Sea you all tomorrow ⛵️⛵️🌊🌊

Hope everyone had an egg-cellent Easter 🐣—even if we took the weekend off to enjoy some egg-stravagant treats from the Big Bunny!

No racing this time, but don’t let your sea legs get rusty—Autumn Pennant Races 5 & 6 are just over the horizon ⛵

📅 Saturday 11th April
⏰ First race starts at 1:00pm

So dust off the cobwebs, untangle those sheets, and get ready to tack back into action. It’s time to sail into the next races like pros—not like we’ve been adrift on the couch all weekend!

See you on the water—let’s make some waves 🌊

Well, what a weekend that was! The 2026 State Mirror Titles were held over weekend and we can safely say it was one to remember! Here's a recap of the action from Jenny.

"The Mirror State Championship held last weekend, was a real nail biter!

The winner of the series came down to the result of the last heat and about half a boat length!

Congratulations Dete and Matt Wardell in Sky 3, our new State Champions. Well sailed also to Al, Neve and Freya Dennett for the close second.

The story of the series goes to third placed Jade and India who thought they really didn’t need their rudder and centreboard and left them at Kingston Beach SC. Unfortunately, no spares would fit Carpe Diem, but in true Mirror spirit, Scotch Oakburn lent them Flying Flathead for the series!

It was notable that two out of the top three boats were Gunter Rigs.

The Junior Trophy went to B2, sailed by Grady Frith and William Towns and the Youth Trophy to Angus Poulsen and Lucas de Vos in B1.

The Classic Trophy was awarded to Greg Baylis and Neve Lindsay in Double Trouble.

A big thank you to Deviot Sailing Club’s volunteers for a great job in running the series, and to the Orr family for providing the accommodation for the southerners at the beautiful Pine Lodge."

As Jenny said, we want to give a huge thank you to all the competitors, the supportors, rescue boat crews, race control, race organisers and volunteers who without them, we wouldn't be able to hold these great events.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in a fabulous weekend of sailing!

🌊⛵ The State Mirror Titles Are Coming to Deviot! ⛵🌊

This weekend the Deviot Sailing Club is proud to be hosting the Tasmanian Mirror State Championship (alongside the Autumn Regatta), and the river is about to get a whole lot busier (and a whole lot more competitive)!

Sailors from around the state will be descending on Deviot with their Mirrors polished, sails ready, and bragging rights firmly in their sights! Expect plenty of close racing, red sails at the ready, and maybe even the occasional splash or two!

Whether you're a seasoned sailor, a curious spectator, or just looking for a great excuse to spend some time by the water, come down and soak up the atmosphere. There’ll be plenty of action on the river and the usual friendly Deviot welcome on shore.

Bring a chair, bring your sunnies, and come cheer on the fleet!

Good luck to all competitors — may the wind be kind and the tacks be sharp... it's a day knot to be missed!

Ahoy There...
This is not our usual post, but it is an important one.

As most of you will be aware, even if you aren't a sailor, boatie, fisherperson, or watersports fan, overnight saw a devastating fire destroy the home of Tamar Marine, Almasts Australia & Steve Walker Sails - 3 well known and highly respected businesses, both locally and wider afield.

Tamar Marine has been around nearly as long as us and they have been a valued sponsor and supporter of our club.

The additions of Steve Walker Sails and Almasts Australia to the Tamar Marine location made a strong trio of service and support for boaties and Marine enthusiasts of all kinds.

We want to let Owners & Staff of all 3 businesses know that we're thinking of you all and hoping that you're all back up and sailing again soon.

We've already started receiving enquiries from people wondering how they can support you to get back on your feet because of the support and service you've all been providing for a number of years.

Goodnight all.

Ahoy there sailors, land lubbers and those who can feel the spray on their faces from their arm chairs at home! It's time to locate that left glove you swore you put somewhere safe, pour that half tonne of sand out of your boots and prepare yourselves…
🏆 The Lachlan Tunks Trophy Race is ON tomorrow! 🏆
That means:
Serious faces at the start line 😐
Extremely tactical discussions that sound suspiciously like arguing,
And someone definitely forgetting which mark we’re rounding....
Whether you're in it to win it or just in it to not hit anything expensive, it’s going to be an amazing day on the water.
⛵🌟 Also happening: Beginners Sail Training – Session 5! 🌟⛵
That’s right — Session 5!
By now our beginners:
Know which rope does what (mostly)
Can confidently say “starboard!” with authority
And only occasionally sail in the wrong direction (though in all fairness, don't we all ?!)
If you’ve been thinking about giving sailing a go, come down and see what all the fuss is about. We promise fresh air, big smiles, and only mild confusion!

Now on a more serious note, here is a taste of the wonderful history, and name sake of tomorrow's race:
Lachlan Tunks Trophy Race
Lachlan Tunks and his family were members of Deviot Sailing Club from 1976 until his untimely
death in 1982. Lachlan was introduced to sailing at the age of 10 when his father built a Mirror
dinghy, Hunny, to sail at Deviot. It soon became his favourite sport and he was quick to take over the helm from his Dad and sailed many races over the years with his sister Rachel as crew. His dad, Robin, was soon helping out with driving one of the pickup boats every weekend
of the sailing season. Sailing at Deviot was a “must” for Lachlan. He hated to miss a weekend at Deviot (a rare occurrence). Deviot Sailing Club provided him not only an opportunity to get out on the water and race, but also he and his family made great friends at the sailing club and he enjoyed spending time with them. He was quite successful, winning the club junior championship, and in 1981 he won the junior division and the overall handicap prize of the
McIntyre cup. The Tunks family previously donated the painting of the view of the club that was
so well known and loved by Lachlan for the Club’s Mirror Championship award. Lachlan’s family are very happy to see Deviot Sailing Club continues to honour his memory with this trophy race.
The race is a continuous laps format with the trophy awarded on progressive handicap result.

See you on the water! 🌊⛵
