Clutch Hitting Propels Nightcliff Tigers To Victory Over Palmerston and Rural Reds
Jackson Gillespie drove in four runs on four hits to lead Nightcliff Tigers past Palmerston and Rural Reds 17-2 on Sunday. Gillespie hit a home run to center field in the third scoring two, singled in the first scoring one, and singled in the fourth scoring one.
Nightcliff Tigers won thanks in part to nine runs in the third inning. Jared Monk doubled, scoring one run, Alex Turner singled, scoring two runs, Ben Lawerence hit a grand slam to left field, and Gillespie homered to center field, scoring two runs.
Nightcliff Tigers opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to two singles. Nightcliff Tigers first got on the board when Gillespie singled, scoring one run.
A single by Anthony Zamolo extended the Nightcliff Tigers lead to 3-0 in the top of the second inning.
Nightcliff Tigers scored five runs on six hits in the top of the fourth inning. Lawerence singled, scoring one run, Gillespie singled, scoring one run, Mark MacDonald was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Monk singled, scoring one run, and Turner singled, scoring one run.
Adrian Handford earned the win for Nightcliff Tigers. The southpaw allowed three hits and two runs over three innings, striking out five and walking two. Daneik Stanton took the loss for Palmerston and Rural Reds. The pitcher went two innings, surrendering eight runs on 10 hits, striking out none and walking three. Lawerence tossed one inning of shutout ball for Nightcliff Tigers in relief. The pitcher surrendered one hit, striking out one and walking none.
Nightcliff Tigers collected 20 hits in the game. Lawerence went 3-for-4 at the plate and led the team with five runs batted in. MacDonald, Zamolo, Monk, and Turner each collected multiple hits for Nightcliff Tigers. Nightcliff Tigers had patience at the plate, accumulating seven walks for the game. Handford, Hamish Sulley, and Tom Lewis led the team with two free passes each. Handford threw an immaculate inning in the first, striking out the side on nine pitches. Nightcliff Tigers turned one double play in the game. Nightcliff Tigers were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Lawerence had the most chances in the field with five.
