The Waratah Football club was founded in late 1916 by a group of men who just wanted to play football on weekends. They had no idea they were starting something special; a community club that has celebrated nearly 103 years together. The Waratah Football Club is the only club in the Northern Territory Football League with a continuous century-long history and the only club that has played in every

year that the league has run. The club played their first game at the old Darwin Oval, which is now known as the Esplanade. This match introduced the famous red and white colours that are still worn by all Waratah teams today. Waratah Football Club have come from humble beginnings with the first clubhouse built at Fannie Bay oval in the 1950’s. In 2001,

The Waratah Sports Club was opened and a new home for the club was made at the iconic Gardens Oval in the heart of Darwin. These facilities continue to improve with the times, featuring a licensed bar, commercial kitchen, and state of the art technology within. The club has a strong history of success with 15 Men’s Premier League Premierships, 6 Women’s Premier League Premierships and 18 Men’s Division 1 Premierships, just to name a few. Waratah currently has over 500 players across 15 junior and senior teams, 160 members and countless, passionate supporters. The Waratah Football Club has an established program of providing children and women from the Tiwi Islands the opportunity to participate in sport in Darwin. The Waratah Football club provides this opportunity for approximately 48 children from the Tiwi Islands each year. These children would have otherwise had no opportunity to participate in sport over that period. Club mission

through to our Men and Women’s Premier League sides.

👏 Congratulations to Warrior Junior, Wesley Campbell who has been selected to train with West Coast Eagles 'Naitanui Academy’.

🎤 U13s Coach Adam Govers said -

"It doesn't come as a surprise to hear Wesley has been selected to train with a club like West Coast Eagles. Wesley only played a handful of games with Waratah's last season (R/U B&F) before having to relocate, however his pace, skill and ability to take the game on made him arguably the best player in the U13 league.

The potential Wesley shows at this early age is very exciting to watch and I wish him all the very best down south in the cooler climate. Go get them Wesley."

🖊️ As announced at Senior Presentation, the WFC is proud to announce the re-signing of Troy Rantanen as the WPL Coach for 2026-2027.

🎤 Of his signing Troy said -

“I’m excited for the opportunity to coach the Waratah WPL again next season. Last year, we built a strong foundation and showed significant growth across the program. Our focus now is to build on that momentum with a strong pre-season, while continuing to prioritise player retention and recruitment.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have such a talented and committed group of women and girls throughout the entire program, which makes coaching this club so rewarding.”

🌟 Congratulations - Shane Carroll 🌟

Club Legend status is the highest honour awarded by the Waratah Football Club — recognising Life Members whose long-term contribution, loyalty, and service have become part of the fabric of our club.

Shane’s contribution to the club has spanned nearly four decades. Since making his debut in the 1987/88 season, he has represented Waratah with pride both on and off the field.

A respected player, Shane played 78 Premier League games and 115 Reserve grade games, earning multiple honours including the NTFL Mitch Lee Medal twice and consecutive Waratah Reserves Best & Fairest awards.

Awarded Life Membership in 2003/04, Shane’s legacy has continued to grow through his incredible volunteer service across every level of the club. From coaching, team management, umpiring, committee roles, match day support, training operations, and ground preparation, Shane has always stepped up wherever needed.

His dedication, humility, and club-first attitude have earned him numerous volunteer and community awards, but more importantly, the respect of generations of Waratah players, members, and families.

His contribution has never been about recognition; it has always been about strengthening the Waratah Football Club and supporting those around him.

Alexander Aurrichio Humanitarian Award 2025-26

The Alexander Aurrichio Humanitarian Award was created in memory of Alexander “Rooch” Aurrichio, who was tragically killed in a cycling accident on June 8, 2020.

Rooch was an incredible person with a love for life and adventure. Known for his kind and caring nature, he was always willing to help others and brought energy and warmth to everyone around him.

This award is presented to a club member who shows the same compassion for others and contributes to the welfare and happiness of those around them.

🌟Congratulations - Brodie Carroll🌟

Brodie’s 150 Men’s Premier League games for the Waratah Football Club are a true reflection of his loyalty, leadership, and dedication to the red and white.

Starting his journey through the junior ranks from U14s, Brodie made his Men’s Premier League debut in the 2016/17 season and quickly became a respected leader within the club. From 2019/20 to 2021/22 he served as Co-Captain before becoming Captain in the 2022/23 season.

That same season, Brodie celebrated his 100-game milestone and famously led Waratah to a historic Premiership victory, ending a 23-year drought.

This season, he reached another incredible milestone with 150 Men’s Premier League games — an achievement that reflects not only his durability and performance, but his unwavering commitment to the club.

The Waratah Football Club proudly recognises and congratulates Brodie Carroll on becoming a Life Member.
