SIDE SETTLING

We know we need to place our babies on their backs for sleep. That is the safest position.
But...
We don't necessarily have to settle them on their backs.
Hear me out.

Placing your baby on their side can often have a calming effect, have a look at Harvey Karps 5 S's.

This is a great position for your baby to learn to fall asleep in their cot. You can still be really hands on and is much easier for you to pat and soothe your baby.

If your baby is falling asleep in your arms, but never transferring to their cot, try placing them on their side, then gently rolling them onto their back.

Remember, always place baby on their back once asleep or unsupervised.

Does your baby settle easier on their side?

BABY NAMES

Please share your most loved baby boy names (obvs not the ones you plan to use hahaha)

I am in some desperate need of some name inspiration!
When I was pregnant with Naomi we had her name picked before we new she would be a girl. We were so confident and couldn't understand why people found this hard! How naïve! Now, I'm almost at the end of this pregnancy and haven't fallen in love with a single name. There has been plenty we like, just none that we LOVE (know what I mean?)

At this point, I am open to anything, just something that sounds nice with Naomi.

TODDLER NUTRITION

Do you have a picky/fussy eater?
It is super common for toddlers who once ate really well as a baby, to suddenly start practicing their authority around meal times. Therefore, being fussy, picky or simply not eating.

There are NO magic foods that will MAKE your toddler sleep. There are foods that can assist with sleep though. But most most importantly, ensuring your toddler is eating enough of the right things CAN make a difference to your child's sleep, but it will not necessarily be the only thing contributing to toddler sleep issues. A few common things to be on the lookout for in regards to food and sleep are:
- Too much milk
- Not enough protein
- Iron and Zinc deficiency ( can be hard to spot!)

If you suspect your toddler's eating habits are affecting their sleep, my biggest tip is to implement a super structured meal schedule. This can be tricky, but when it becomes consistent, we can see great results.
If you think it is more than this, you should always talk to your health care provider to ensure they are receiving exactly what they need.

EBOOK LAUNCH
Monday 7pm ACST

I have been working my huge pregnant but off to get this ready in time for my own newborn.

WHAT IS IT?
It is not sleep training, not a program and not a guide.
This is a select collection of strategies, tools and expectations, for you to use to enhance and optimise the sleep of your newborn.

WHY NOT A PROGRAM?

I'm a big believer in NOT putting your newborn on a schedule, instead I love using routines to help with predictability and optimising restorative sleep.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

You can expect to feel knowledgeable and confident in what your baby needs. You will be given flexible routines, strategies and settling techniques to choose from. YOU decide what works for YOUR baby.
There is science, sleep is all science. You will work within your baby's natural rhythms to achieve the best possible sleep for the entire family.

YES

Who uses nap time to get stuff done?

Or at least, who PLANS to get stuff done when their kid sleeps?

Is it not the most ANNOYING thing in the world when you have the most productive intentions, the most structured 'to-do' list and the most energy you have ever had, to get things done, then your kid wakes?
YES
It kills me.

It's my number one reason for not doing house work. (jokes ill take any excuse not to do house work haha!)

MUSLIN VS JERSERY

I LOVE a swaddle. The soothing affect it has on babies is 10 to none! Not to mention how it helps our babies sleep longer!

But what should we swaddle them in? Lots of opinions are circulating over muslin or jersey, so I put together a little list to help you decide what to use for your bub!

MUSLIN (White fabric)
- Light weight & soft
- Great for a warm climate
- Multiple uses
- No stretch can make it difficult to swaddle.

JERSEY (polka dot fabric)
- Thick material.
- Stretch allows for a easier and more snug swaddle.
- Great for cooler climate.

Personally, I love the jersey swaddle for its snug fit and easy wrap that doesn't always come undone. In saying that, I also have a huge stash of Muslin wraps as I live in Darwin, where it is always as hot as the sun.

THE SIGNS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Save this and practice recognising the signs!

I'm sure we have all heard of sleepy cues/signs and tired signs/cues.
But did you know there is a difference in these tired signs, and this difference can make the world of difference in your baby's sleep.

For young babies our goal needs to be to prevent them from becoming overtired. This is a HUGE cause for many sleep issues.

We can avoid overtiredness by identifying their EARLY and LATE tired signs. Catching bub's early tired signs will tell you that you have about 10-15 minutes to have baby asleep.
If your catching your baby's late tired signs, they may already be overtired, and falling and staying asleep can be a lot harder.

The catch with this though, is that the early tired signs are REALLY hard to identify. They are often so subtle, we miss them! In this case we need to monitor their awake time WITH their tired signs.

These are not the only tired signs around, many babies will have their own subtle cue. (Naomi would bring her fists to her chest!)

Baby's are not so simple hey!

THUMB SUCKING

Who has one? I do!
Who is worried about having one? I was.

But I have learnt it is a normal, natural behaviour that has been seen as early as in utero.

Thumb sucking is the same as finger sucking, dummy sucking, comfort sucking. These are all ways our children can calm themselves.
Thumb sucking releases dopamine and endorphins, which are feel good hormones! No wonder these behaviours can be addictive.
Other ways we can see babies and toddler soothe themselves is:
- Hair twirling
- Pinching
- Scratching (on clothes or mattress)
- Cuddling toys
-Headbanging (sounds horrendous, looks horrendous, can be totally normal)

But back to thumb sucking, like anything, prolonged use CAN cause long term effects. Most health professionals agree not to worry before the age of 3, as many toddlers will simply grow out of it. Which is exactly my plan!

Let me know your thoughts on this controversial matter.
