Hi there, our fantastic SMIT company has recently entered into awkward period staff transitions. The world has presented new opportunities to our people and so we wish them well in those new adventures. Hence SMIT is now actively seeking qualified maritime instructors to join the team. We remain committed to progressing our online programmes while the practical sessions are adjusted. We remain the only maritime RTO in Darwin with a good boat with SMIT ADVANCE and intend to keep it available to our clients. Our team spent part of last week carrying out maintenance on the SMIT Advance, including removing barnacles from the hull.

Barnacles attach themselves to boats that remain in the water for periods of time. Regular vessel maintenance, particularly removing barnacles, is important as they can damage anti fouling coatings and increase drag, leading to higher fuel consumption.

To stay attached, barnacles secrete a strong natural adhesive that works underwater and has inspired research into new types of marine glues.

Barnacles can also spread as invasive species. When vessels move between waterways, regular hull maintenance helps reduce fuel use and protect local aquatic environments.

The Williamson Turn is a manoeuvre every seafarer should know. If someone falls overboard and you lose sight of them, use the Williamson Turn to safely and quickly return to your original track to begin searching.

Steps
• Immediate Action: Note your current course and quickly turn the rudder hard toward the side where the person fell.
• 60° Turn: Keep turning until your heading changes by about 60 degrees from your original course.
• Rudder Shift: Turn the rudder hard in the opposite direction.
• Approach Reciprocal Course: Continue turning until you are within about 20 degrees of your reciprocal course (180 degrees opposite your original course).
• Straighten Up: When you’re 20 degrees from your reciprocal course, straighten the rudder to midship. This will bring you onto your original track.
• Slow Down & Search: Reduce speed and watch for the person overboard.
