On this day today we gave our humble HEMA Club a stress-test with its first formal Internal Tournament, the ‘Graham Cup’ longsword and sabre tournament. Fought round-robin over two rounds of pools amongst 5 fighters, it gave our team a chance to experience a tournament-setting, practice judging, refereeing, timekeeping as well as fighting within a tournament format.

Tom Maskew took home 1st place and a commemorative Graham Cup coffee cup

Liv Ruby was awarded 2nd place for their hard work and efforts

Many thanks to the volunteers for helping judge, timekeep and scorekeep. With the first year of our Club’s nearly concluded, we have room to improve, skills to refine and an annual Tournament to look forward and measure our growth with.

Some of my highlights from a Longsword Tournament at Ursa Major HEMA Academy

Not quite happy with my efforts, i fell back onto an old habit and thus i feel ashamed i had pulled my own rug out from under me and it reflected in the matchs’ results.

Ah well, more to drill and practice into myself before my next tournament War In The West! Cheers to Ursa Major HEMA Academy for hosting and organising these tournaments and cheers to everyone i fought today, i hope to fight more of you at the next one!

Nearly 2 weeks ago i competed at the 2026 Iron Bloom Tournament, hosted generously by Aiginskalk - Historical European Martial Arts and met plenty fierce and still yet, exhilarating and stimulating fights and competitors

I had a blast with every fight and while still no medal yet to bring home, i did get much closer to that goal and every defeat felt very close and still very satisfying to experience.
