Last night was our 2nd Black Belt Class for 2026, and what an awesome night of training, learning and sharing!

It was fantastic to have Sensei Darryl Thornton, along with some of his top students, join us at the Australian Shukokai Karate Dojo in Dandenong.

A huge well done to everyone who turned up, trained hard and embraced the opportunity to learn and develop together. 👊

A very special thank you to Sensei Darryl and his group for making the trip and sharing the knowledge and experience he continues to bring back from Japan through his ongoing training with Hanshi and Shihan Steve.

These sessions are a great reminder that as martial artists, we never stop learning, growing and challenging ourselves.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible athletes, coaches, families, friends, referees, volunteers and first aiders for helping make our tribute so beautiful and meaningful.

A special thank you to Karate Victoria President Muzzafer for your endless support, our bagpiper Richard, whose moving performance helped us honour Sensei Alan, our DJ Blair for providing the music throughout the day, the Adidas team for supporting our athletes with their equipment stall and Barry for capturing the day with his wonderful photographs that will help preserve these special memories.

We would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to Sensei Alan’s beautiful family, Kirsty and Martha, for attending this very special event. Your presence meant so much to our entire Shukokai community, and it was a privilege to honour his legacy alongside you.

This year holds a very special significance. Twenty years without Sensei Alan, and on Saturday, we would have celebrated what would have been his 80th birthday.

Today, we remember a man who was noble, honest, admirable and deeply respected. A man whose strength, kindness and unwavering belief in others helped shape the people and the karate community we are today.

As we remember him, we also remind ourselves to live by the values he embodied — integrity, passion, dedication and unwavering commitment.

We are who we are because of his strength, his kindness and the foundations he built. His influence continues to guide us, inspire us and live on through every student, coach and family who carries the spirit of Shukokai forward.

20 years may have passed, but we miss him dearly. His legacy will always live on. ❤️

Congratulations on your appointment as Assistant National Coach for Australian Karate and best wishes on the beginning of another exciting chapter. 🇦🇺

Karate Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Kit Fullinfaw as Assistant National Veteran Coach, joining our National Coaching Team.

The appointment recognises Kit’s experience as both an athlete and coach, including national-level competition experience across Kata and Kumite, together with coaching involvement at state level.

Working alongside the National Veteran Coach and broader National Coaching Team, the role will focus on:

• Supporting the preparation and development of our Veteran athletes
• Assisting at national training activities, camps and designated events
• Providing competition coaching and athlete support at approved national and international events
• Supporting both Kata and Kumite athletes where required
• Working collaboratively with coaches, team management and support personnel

This appointment represents another important step in strengthening Karate Australia’s National Veteran program and the support provided to our athletes.
