Match report
Round 6 North Coburg

We seem to always come up against coburg on a major event day and today was no different with the club celebrating a player playing his 350th game

We set the tone in the first inning scoring 4 while batting through the lineup
They answered with two runs to halve the score
In the third we scored another two runs to be up four and take back control of the game
Some great hitting in the next two innings got us up 14-2 with just needing 3outs to end the game
Coburg wouldn’t let up though collecting hit after hit to get two back but we managed to get the last two outs to end the game 14-4

Hits
Mitch 2 double
Sam 1
Max 1
Ryan 3 double
Aden 1
Bj 2
Ronan 1
Jason 1

Pitching

Bj 2inn 5h 2ers

2nds lost 4-10

Ryan pitched well, but we didn’t back him up all that well in the field or with the bats.

Their pitcher was throwing pretty well though and they did field quite well including 2 outfield put outs at 1st base, so credit to Nth Coburg there.

Just the big double off Crawfs bat for us today, and a few walks.

3rd’s DEF Knox 8-5
This week we were away against the undefeated Knox and knew we were going to have to fight hard to be competitive, particularly with a few players missing from last week.
We didn’t get the bats going in the first innings, failing to get any on base. Knox then managed to get 2 runs on the board, partly due to a couple of errors in the infield. Our second innings was more promising, with multiple runners on base, however we still couldn’t quite get anyone home. Our infield really kicked into gear in the bottom of the second, and supported some great pitching from DK, and they only managed to add 1 to their score.
The third innings we got onto a roll, with some patient batting seeing us bat almost entirely through our line-up and add 5 runs to put us in front for the first time in the game and then held Knox scoreless in the bottom of the third.
Once again in the 4th innings, we batted patiently, managing to put another 3 runs onto our total to give us a 6 run lead heading into the bottom of the 4th and with not much time left in the game. A change of pitching to Kobi started with a walk, then Mitch chimed in with the play of the day, a well fielded double play at short stop, hitting Liam at first with a bullet-like throw. Knox did manage to add 2 to their total, but not enough to prevent us getting the W.
It was a really pleasing, full team performance that wasn’t reliant on any one player standing out, our entire infield was on point after the first innings and the batting was highlighted with hits for Kobi & Chris, DK pitched 3 innings for only 3 hits.

Round 5 Diamond Creek

Back at home against the newly promoted team who have some quality bats in their lineup

Glenn got the start and kept them quiet early thanks to some defence behind him
Our bats were on early but just didn’t have the luck with a runner on third with none out and lining the ball over the bag for a double play and then having the next two make base and then having another hard hit ball well caught in the outfield
The third inning was where the scoring started with diamond creek hitting a grand slam and us answering with two
In the 5th we opened up the game by scoring 8 with some good hitting to put the result out of reach

Hits
Mitch 2 double
Sam 1
Ryan 4 2doubles
Aden 3
Glenn 1
Ronan 2 double
Cooper 3 2doubles

Pitching

Bj 2inn 1h

B res loss 12-6

We gave them a 8 run start, they completely outplayed us for the first half of the game, their big lefty was pitching very well after 2 1/2 innings we were down 8-0, bottom of the third with two outs runner on 2nd Max got our first hit to score Chaq, a couple of walks then Crawf belted one through the cones to score 2, RBI hits then to Peter and Hickey we were back in it 8-5.
We held them to 0 for first time then scored another on two solid hits to Ben and Max, 8-6 now with time for one last innings.
We got two quick outs but then couldn’t find a final out for some time they scored 4 runs and made it a bit too difficult to come back.
Some positives here for sure against decent pitching, but defensively some things to work on.

2 hits for Max and Crawf
1 for Ben Peter and Hickey

3’s defeated Footscray 9-2
WE DID IT!!!
This week we started with Dan on the mound and with Rama getting us underway with a nice double play, Footscray managed to get 1 run on the board. We then struggled again to get the bats going, with only Liam managing to get on base with a hit by pitch walk.
Second innings saw Dan pitch beautifully, only giving up one hit, but they did manage to get another run on the board. In the bottom of the second, it was looking shaky as we went 2 up and down, but then Lily managed to get her first senior hit, and Mitch smashed a double to right field. Alayna followed up with a hit as did Rama and we ran 4 in.
Moving into the third Dan threw 15 pitches for 3 K’s, and we added another run to our total thanks to a Friendy double.
Rama then got the action underway in the 4th with a diving, rolling play from second that had Footscray suggesting he was taking it far too seriously 😊, Dan finished off his afternoon with 2 more K’s. Our bats got going again in the bottom of the 4th to add another 4 runs, with a double from Mick, and hits from Luke, Friendy, Dan and Liam.
We did get a 5th innings started, which Liam pitched, however we couldn’t manage to finish the bottom of the innings, so the scores reverted but Mitch did crack another double before time ran out.

Match report
Round 4 Forest Hill

Missed opportunities with the bat early hurt us with the first two batters reaching base and later having bases loaded and not scoring
We opened our account in the second with a two rbi single by Mitch
They counted by scoring one
The game opened up in the third for them with a couple of errors 4 hits and two hit batters to score 6 and have a 7-2 lead
We battled hard against some good pitching but just couldn’t recover from one bad inning

Hits
Mitch 2 double

Ronan 2 double

Glenn 3 1/3inn 3bb 8hits 2ers

B res Loss 7-6
We had a great start scoring 4 in the first on 6 hits and a walk unfortunately left the bases loaded, they scored one and then we traded runs for a few innings until with 20 mins or so left they scored 4 runs to take the lead for the first time.
They put a young guy on the mound who struggled to throw any strikes and we patiently took 4 walks to bring the tying run in, they went to another young guy who struggled similarly walking in two more runs. Time was getting tight now with only 10 minutes post the finish time to get them out we should have tried harder to finish our innings but 3 more batters came up before we were out leaving us only 8 minutes or so to get them out to win the game.
We got the first two out and then had 2 strike counts on the next two before they got hits keeping the game going, 2 balls to the 5th batter and that was it a hard stop 10 minutes post the slotted finishing time and the score reverted back to 7-6 even though we were up 12-7.
A tough way to lose but we learned something that will hopefully help us in the future.
Hits on the day to
Max Chaq Pete and Marc all with 2, 1 for Cooper Rowan and Kobi and walks for pretty much everyone.
Our fielding was pretty good with just a couple of missed opportunities Peter Harris was particularly solid at 3rd and Cooper took some nice grabs at CF, Kobi also took a good one at LF in his first time in the outfield this year.

3rds def by Sunshine 14-5
After two successive weeks of 20 run losses, we managed a much more competitive outing.
The first innings saw us struggling again to score, and then Liam took the mound to close out the Sunshine innings for 2 runs. The second dig saw a repeat of the first with still no score on the board. Liam once again started well and had them 2 down with only one more added to the score, when the zone inexplicably changed and Liam struggled to get any more strikes for the remainder of the innings, and Sunshine capitalised on this with seven runs.
We then got the runs moving, Lily started with a lead off walk, then Rama with a walk and Danni a hit to keep us moving around. Mick then hit a 2 RBI single, Mitch and Dan a hit as well to see us peg back their lead with a 5 run innings.
A change of pitcher in the bottom of the third to Dan kept us in the game, with Sunshine only adding 1 run to their total, unfortunately we couldn’t carry our output from the third into the fourth with another scoreless innings, and then Sunshine then added 4 to their total.
Overall, a big improvement from previous weeks, let’s keep training hard and working on those little things that make the difference.
