Congratulations to Vince G on winning the Sport & Centrefire Trophy on Saturday 28 Mar, with a mighty score of 463/600 in a field of 6 shooters competing. Scoresheets attached. Vince was using a R***r Mk III with competition grips.

Remember only those firing "off-hand" are competing. Apologies to Vince no presentation was made; a separate photo opportunity will have to be booked for posterity plus get you the personal trophy in due course.

Mark C won the Steel Challenge with a score of 16.62 seconds, Hunter Gillespie (who has come out of hibernation now that it is winter and the end of the FY approaches) second on 19.07 and Ben S third on 19.37 seconds.

Sunday 29th was a beautiful Autumn day, the range site is looking good (the word bucolic to describe the whole scene comes to mind). On the 25m Range we decided to just do personal training and be gone before 09:00am precisely. There were six of us and we had a wonderful time. No one turned up for the IPSC which was highly unusual, IPSC being the most popular shoot on the calendar.

Anyway that is goodbye to March, only three months (or 14 shoots) left on the calendar.

Next weekend the range is closed for Easter. So see you on 11th April for the Working Bee and BBQ followed by the Practical and IPSC on respective ranges.

Our monthly working bee this weekend (7 Mar) was a bit of a washout being too wet for outside maintenance, although some tidying up was able to be done. It was more a case of standing around and having a good ole chin wag! And then we had a great BBQ to top things off as usual, thanks to the chef once again who had a nice marquee erected over his head. Said marquee being donated by Rob Botfield as well as a 2-drawer steel cabinet for the 25m Range so thank you for that.

There were no shooters on the 50m Range for the Service Pistol. Being designed to be shot all out in the open, perhaps the threat of rain was a discouraging factor. Instead everyone opted to attend the Practical Shoot which is undercover except for the scoring part. The rain held off long enough for the 18 shooters who signed on, keeping the RO, John Eggins, on his toes.

Mark Casey wiped the floor with a top score of 557/600, a superb effort. The rest of us were there just for show because even second place at 387/600 was nowhere near cooee - I'm going to have to buy myself a Volquartsen. Regardless of scores, the Practical is always a fun shoot.

So next weekend is the Standard (Modified) up top and IPSC on the 50m. Let's hope the rain holds off for the IPSC.

And of course there is the March General Meeting.

We highlighted the training conducted up top on the 25m Range. What we didn't mention was that while that was going on the practical shooters down below on the 50m Range were really rocking on Saturday (3-Gun) and Sunday (IPSC). Good attendance on both days.

Good to see Rob D again after a long absence and looking dapper as always, Richard B finally took delivery of his new toy, a mean looking Beretta XY Performance and gave it a serious run on both days - he battled it out tenaciously for last place with Joe Murphy.

Tony B dominated both days although pushed hard by Jed S on Sunday.

Scores below.

3-Gun (Saturday):
Tony B - 90.40 (secs)
Ben S - 119.22
Rob D - 126.90
Stephen O - 146.45
Joe M - 154.13
Richard B - 158.87
Brian W - 166.02

IPSC (Sunday)
Tony B - 279.5801
Jed S - 278.2531
Stephen O - 229.2503
Mark A - 208.7948 (visitor)
Geoff M - 140.0062
Joe M - 86.3273
Richard B - 46.2920

Reminder that next Saturday is a Working Bee starting at 07:30am, a delicious BBQ at 09:00am followed by the Practical Shoot on the 25m Range and .22 Rimfire Rifle on the 50m Range.

Great day today. We had seven attend the 3-Gun on the 50m Range and 12 total on the25m for a scheduled Training Day.

The training on the 25m was in two parts. The first part was normal individual training starting at the usual time following by an extra training session for those who nominated conducted by Mark Casey. The emphasis was on the Fundamentals of Shooting - I timed it, there was half an hour of talking followed by an hour of application i.e. shooting and debriefing after every 10 rounds on the fundamentals just covered.

There were five all up who took the opportunity for what essentially was some extra coaching - Vanetta, Dave, Richard, Rebeca, Paul. Thanks Mark for a well put together and relaxed session and to the one-on-ones (or really personal coaches) - Ben, John, Otis and Mick.

Happy snap attached. I think we do more of these types of sessions.

Saturday 19th July 2025

Both ranges were well attended last weekend with 9 shooters attending the annual John Fabbri Memorial Trophy Shoot on the 25m Range and 10 at the IPSC on the 50m Range.

John Fabbri was a member of the club who tragically died of cancer on the 2nd July 1999. His parents, George and Irida Fabbri, also members of the club sponsored the trophy in his memory. The shoot, now in its 26th year is held on the Saturday on or nearest the date of John’s passing.

The trophy shoot was originally designed around a day of activities to raise funds to support the work of the Cancer Council. It was advertised, other clubs were invited, people paid a fee to enter, there were sponsors, prizes, raffles, BBQ and so on. It was a big day with the Mayor of Crows Nest (patron of the club at the time) invited to present the trophy as well as a member/s of the Cancer Council to accept the prize. All with suitable local media coverage.

So apart from memorialising John and making a contribution to a charity relevant to John's passing, the day's activities added greatly to the club's community profile.

As time went on the trophy has morphed into the current format. It is worth noting the inaugural winner was Herbie Squires now retired and no longer a member of the club.

Winner of this year’s trophy was Dan P with a score of 469/600. Followed by Adam on 398/600 and Peter K on 372/600.

This is the third year in a row Dan has taken out this trophy, so well-done mate. For an overview, recent results for this trophy have been:

2 Jul 22 - Mark C 433/600
15 Jul 23 - Dan P 504/600
20 Jul 24 - Dan P 487/600
19 Jul 25 - Dan P 469

The attached photo shows Dan (on the right) receiving his trophy.

See you on the Range.

Shoots on the program this weekend are the Standard Match Shoot on the 25m Range and the Service Pistol 50 Trophy Match (SP 50) on the 50m Range.

To refresh our memories the Standard match comprises three timed stages of 150 secs, 20 secs and 10 secs for a total of 60 rounds. In each of these Stages we fire four strings of fire each of 5 shots.

The SP 50 Trophy match is contested once every six months. The last one programmed was in August last year but did not go ahead for unknown reasons. There were only four in attendance on the day.

Before that, it was 12 months ago to the day on 10th February 2024 with Mark Casey taking out the trophy with 461 points out of 600. There were five people attending who contested the trophy.

To clarify, the SP 50 match is a holster match for .32 to .38in/.357in calibre. However, those without holster accreditation can participate at the ROs discretion, ditto for those wanting to shoot with a rimfire.

Attendance has been good this year with 10 or more attending each Saturday. So let’s see if we can get a good turnout to compete for the trophy as it is an interesting shoot. And it is that time of year when we people need to catch up on their shoots – the following factoids may help in making a decision whether to attend or not, depending on which group an individual may fall (E & OE):

• People with zero shoots – 12.
• Less than 8 shoots – 15 people.
• Less than 6 shoots – 32.

Tomorrow's program (Saturday 11 Jan 25) is cancelled due to the rain. Thanks.

Crows Nest Pistol Club Hosts Shoot
As Part of RSL Big Day Out
Saturday 19th October 2024

The Crows Nest Returned Services League (RSL) facilitated a Big-Day-Out last Saturday 19th October, the aim of which was to connect RSL members and other community service officers with local clubs and groups. Local Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Police Service, Fire and Emergency Services, Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service, Crows Nest Pistol Club (CNPC) and Crows Nest Bowls Club were invited to participate.

For its part, the Crows Nest Pistol Club hosted a shoot as one of the key activities for the day. Participants had earlier enjoyed a walk and BBQ breakfast at the RSL before rolling up to the pistol club for a fun shoot under the watchful eye of Brian Webb (Chief Range Officer for the day) and his team of helpers. This was followed by lunch and a game of bowls at the Bowls club, after which participants were invited back to the RSL for a hard-earned cold drink.

The day was aimed at fostering a network of healthy relationships amongst our service men and women, and the community. Conversely, participation by community groups such as Crows Nest Pistol Club and Crows Nest Bowls Club provided them the opportunity to show their appreciation for the hard work and sacrifice our service personnel have made and continue to make on behalf of our community. A bonus from the pistol club perspective was the opportunity to engage with the community, to highlight the commitment of our members to their sport and to showcase our facilities which are amongst the best in the region, if not the best.

There were 18 participants for the shoot who, from all indications, thoroughly enjoyed the shoot. Our guests turned in some crackerjack performances even from those who had never held a pistol before. The energy and enthusiasm were infectious, clearly indicating the level of enjoyment with the possibility of snagging a recruit or two for the pistol club!

The support from the club membership was excellent and appreciated. By regulation unlicensed shooters require one-on-one supervision so there must be sufficient licensed shooters for a shoot like this to even start. And we got the numbers. So, thanks go to those who organised and made the day work. And to the more than 10 licensed shooters who gave up a gazetted shoot day on the calendar, including a popular shoot on the 50m Range to provide the support and make the day a success for our visitors.

Finally, the RSL is to be commended for initiating this activity, there is scope to repeat the day next year. And once again the Committee takes this opportunity to thank our Service Men and Women and their families for their commitment to helping our community and our Nation. Thank you for your service.
