Time for another update for the Croom Hockey Centre fields. The LED lights on the bottom (sand) field have been completed except for two centre lights awaiting some parts to finish the installation. Unfortunately, cleaning of this field was delayed last week due to the field needing to be dry. This will now occur in the coming weeks, weather permitting. Meanwhile, for the top field, the decision has been made to renew the shockpad. This should be underway next week along with works on the watering system upgrade. Yes, we are all a little frustrated that the upgrades were not completed before the season started. But for your info the initial plan was to have the work done by February 2022 !! with contractors already selected though not engaged. However, then issues with DA requirements led to the project being run by Shellharbour City Council. This resulted in the project needing to go through Council tendering processes which took the timing out of our (Croom Hockey Centre Management & Turf Committee’s) control. Hence, we find ourselves where we are with the project now well underway and to be completed before the end of May. A more definite date should be available next week. One big positive out of this has been that the extra cost (>$150,000) associated with the shockpad renewal is going to be covered by Council. So, stay patient and excited as the completion of a long awaited first class synthetic surface & lighting for the Croom Hockey Centre nears. Now to find that grant opportunity that helps provide the $1M+ required for the upgrade to the bottom (sand) field and ancillary facilities. Just remember we are volunteers trying to do our best for hockey 🏑🏑🏑

Following the completion of the recent facility upgrades at the Illawarra Hockey Centre there will be a "Celebration" this coming Saturday, 17 March at 11am.

The upgrades have included the renewal of two synthetic turf fields, the installation of LED lighting to both fields and the stadium plus the addition of 100kW of solar to the stadium and the viewing building. This project has been managed by Illawarra Hockey Inc. the Illawarra Hockey Centre's operators and has cost $1.4M. It was funded through the NSW State Governments, Greater Cities Sports Facility Fund (Round 1) for $896,000 with the remaining funds of $506,000 from Illawarra Hockey Inc.

The celebrations will include the official opening of the Illawarra South Coast Hockey 2023 Field Competition. Please come along and join in the celebration with a free sausage sizzle and meet Hockey NSW's Pride mascot Rory the Lion.

Definitely time for an update on how the Croom Hockey Centre synthetic field, watering and lighting upgrade is going. All the tenders have been completed with Shellharbour City Council awarding Tiger Turf to supply the synthetic surface, WaterMatic the upgraded irrigation watering system and PowerbyWatts the LED lighting upgrade for both fields. An initial timeline has been prepared indicating completion by the 5 May. However, following removal of the existing synthetic surface and assessment of the shockpad and the base asphalt by AcoustoScan it looks like both will need replacement to meet the standards required for the future of the fields use. It is as yet unknown how much delay may be added due to this work, but could be up to a month. While it is dissapointing that the project has been delayed and is now impacting on the regular Illawarra South Coast Hockey Association competitions and club training the good news is that the additional works to the original scope will not need to be funded by the Croom Hockey Centre Management Committee and we will end up with a first class synthetic hockey field for the future 🏑🏑

Some news on the Illawarra Hockey Centre fields ... all but finished. Awaiting eager hockey players next year to play on the blue turfs. 😄🏑🏑🏑

Well, things are definitely underway with the turf replacements at the Illawarra Hockey Centre. Both fields have been ripped up over the past few days and the new turf for one field has arrived in two 40ft containers along with all the glue to stick it down. Have had a few issues with the shockpad sticking to the turf as it was removed in some patches but this will all be rectified prior to the laying of the new turf.
Sale of the old turf has begun and we have already had 10 pickups over the weekend. So, if you haven't already put in an order for any of it please contact [email protected] to place an order or ask for more info.
Will keep you updated over the coming weeks as the work progresses.
Plus, some good news for the Croom top field surface. A turf supplier has been selected and work should begin before the end of the year to have this field renewed. The watering upgrade and LED lighting projects associated with this are still in progress but are planned to coincide with the turf replacement. This is all very exciting as we will have 3 newly surfaced fields to play on in 2023. 🏑🏑🏑

There is quite a stockpile of lost & found clothing, water bottles and other items that have been collected over a number of months at the Illawarra Hockey Centre. Refer attached photos.
As there has been limited collection of items, a decision has been made that all items not claimed by 8 August will be either donated to charity or discarded. If you know you have left items behind at the Centre please come in and claim them prior to this date.

The items are normally kept inside the stadium near the office and the stairs leading to the mezzanine. During competition hrs, over coming weeks, they will be placed outside near the canteen.
In future, if you believe you have left items behind please come-in or phone-in to claim your item(s) within a week if at all possible.
