Ok. Definately got some questions about some of the closures…..
The website states it was being closed from Feb 6, the information we put out was directly from council that stated Feb 9, which we received before the website was updated. So apologies from us in that regard, but we were only passing on the info as it had been given to us. There was obviously a change in date that we we not updated about and we rarely look at the trails website unless we really have to.
So to the closures…
Zero issue with the ‘L’ & ‘N’ trails. They all start and/or finish in the area being logged or damn close to it. Same with the section G10 to Port Philip rd. Makes sense to have these closed.
It appears G5 & G6 are closed, which is not advertised.
Our real issue is with the Woodcoupe trails. Even if it’s accounted for that W1-6 are adjacent to the area being thinned, closing W7 & W8 seems ridiculous because it’s a damn long way from the logging operations and they (along with W1) provide a safer passage over to the Cosgrove trails rather than the current option of riding on the same roads the logging trucks / local residents will probably be using.
Speaking of W8, it’s dual direction and only closed at 1 end….go figure 😂
If W7 is going to remain closed, it would be the perfect opportunity to give it a refresh. Certainly needs it in some sections.
We’ve asked the question of council and have requested some clarification as to why, if we get an answer we will update.
In the meantime, this is what we suggest:
1. Stick to the remaining gravity trails (which is nearly all of them)
2. Drive out to the Cosgrove trail head. Much safer to be in the car on the roads out there rather than contending with a logging truck on the bike. Either drive up Niggl or down Davey Rd to get there.
3. Park at St George’s overflow carpark or up the top of the lake, or park at Koala Park and use the goldfields and then T3 / S7 to access the Cosgrove trails.
We had a little over 20mm of rain yesterday and the trails appreciated it. Riding very nicely and some of that talcum powder dust has settled properly for the time being.
