IYENGAR INTENSIVE RETREAT IN SYDNEY
with Suzi Chin Silicz
King’s Birthday Long Weekend
June 6, 7 and 8. 11am-2pm each day

Read on …..
On the June long weekend, we retreat right here at home in Sydney, embraced by the quieter roads, cool air and the warm patina of the Redfern Yoga Space studio and its community.

Yogis love to join intensives and they love to attend retreats. The June long weekend is an ideal opportunity to do both. Whether you live locally or further afield, give yourself a retreat from your usual routine and responsibilities, with an immersive 3 hour intensive class each day to bring focus to your practice.

Yes, it’s wonderful to escape to an idyllic far off location like Bali, Italy and the like. Yet here we are right at home, it’s winter and Sydney slows down somewhat, with shorter days and longer nights, making this an ideal time to cocoon for a work in!

The mid morning sessions are at a time when we are fully awake and freshly rested. We set aside this time each day to feed the body and brain, and to connect with our inner selves. After, curate your days around the practice as you see fit. Maybe it’s returning home and taking time to yourself, to read, bathe, nourish and dream. Or perhaps to enjoy a wander in nature, ... we have so much beauty right in our own backyard. Yoga will remind you to seek balance, breathe and be at peace in your world.

This is a general level intensive retreat for students with minimum 2 years of regular classes / practice and familiar with inversions or the alternatives.

This is essentially how I’ve been teaching pranayama for 30 years. All the hype and selling of ‘breath work’ over the last few years I think creates confusion in understanding what pranayama is all about.

…… that BKS Iyengar was well known for drinking coffee before his morning practice. Many of his long-time students have mentioned that he enjoyed a cup before teaching or practising in Pune.

It’s a nice reminder that even one of the most influential modern yoga masters had very human habits. In fact:
• He believed discipline in practice mattered far more than rigid lifestyle rules.
• He didn’t insist students follow extreme dietary restrictions.
• His focus was always on precision, consistency, and awareness in asana.

Coffee before practice can actually make sense physiologically because caffeine:
• increases alertness and focus
• improves muscle activation
• can slightly increase endurance

Which is why many athletes also use caffeine before training.

So the image of the completely ascetic yogi isn’t always accurate — even great teachers like B. K. S. Iyengar combined deep discipline with ordinary daily pleasures.

And honestly, a morning coffee followed by yoga is a pretty wonderful ritual. ☕✨🧘‍♀️

🙏🏻 I created this retreat in Bali a decade ago to give people a taste of a more long form experience of yoga.

👯Mostly yogis go to their classes once or twice a week and maybe do some practice in between.

❓So, what does a daily deep dive into yoga feel like?

🌿 Firstly, the schedule is planned so there is plenty of time to focus on yoga, being on retreat and of course having a holiday in Bali.

🧘🏻‍♀️🧘🏻‍♂️ We gather in the cool of the early mornings and sit in silent meditation as the jungle around us wakes up. The open air shala is idyllic for yoga practice with a cool floor and surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens.

😌 Afternoons are restorative, a winding down to promote equalibriem, ease and connection to the world of pranayama, yogic breathing.

✨ Around 4 hours in total of yoga a day opens the gateway to connection with the higher self, a chance to see beyond just the physical aspects of yoga and a time to experience its’ transformative powers.

🤩 This is why taking a week far away from usual life and commitments gives you a unique amount of time to deep dive into yoga practice.

☀️🌙 Daytimes and evenings are yours to do what you feel compliments being on retreat. There are two swimming pools, a gorgeous spa.

🍽️ You can dine in the hotel’s open air restaurant or venture out with others to one of Ubud’s many great restaurants and cafes.

🌴 It’s also not unusual to just do yoga, chill in your room and take time out to rest and do nothing! Bali does not require you to keep any sort of agenda. The only routine is getting on the mat each day.

🪷 The retreat is for anyone who has at least 2 years of current yoga experience to more experienced practitioners.

🌺 We stay at and which are balinese boutique villa style hotels both within easy walking distance into Ubud central.

🛏️ 🧘🏽 The retreat includes:
All yoga tuition, 8 nights accommodation inc. b’fast, transfers, welcome dinner, cultural day activity, and more.

It’s often thought that ‘chair yoga’ is used in Iyengar yoga for the older set! Here the chair props the shoulders to lift and open for forearm balance. Work in stages to eventually kick up. You are stronger than you think 💪
