Why does "chronic soreness" swell up after being released? 🤔

​Many people notice a strange phenomenon after undergoing soft tissue release, tendon scraping (Gua Sha), or deep tissue massage:
​Even though the area feels loose immediately after the session, it starts to swell over the next few days. Surprisingly, the more "chronic" or "ancient" the injury, the more obvious the swelling.
​This isn’t necessarily because the therapist used too much force—it’s actually your body "rebooting the system!" 🔧

​In simple terms, this is a physiological "supply and demand imbalance":

​1️⃣ Long-term Dehydration: Chronically tight muscles are like a wrung-out towel. Circulation inside is extremely poor, and blood vessels have been squeezed flat for a long time.

2️⃣ The Floodgate Effect: Once the tissue is released, the pressure vanishes. Arterial blood rushes in like a floodgate opening.

3️⃣ Drainage System Lag: While the blood can get in easily, the surrounding lymphatic vessels and veins—which have also been compressed for years—haven't "woken up" yet. The drainage speed simply can't keep up with the inflow.

​The result: Fluid, proteins, and metabolic waste get trapped in the tissue, causing temporary edema (swelling).

​💡 What should you do if this happens?
​This is actually a normal stage of the repair process, so don’t panic!
​Cold Compress: To soothe acute inflammation.
​Elevation: Use gravity to help with fluid return.
​Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to flush out the metabolic waste that has been stuck for so long.
​Next time you experience swelling after a release, remember to give your body some time. It’s proof that your circulation is successfully being restored. 🌊
