The amount of times I’ve seen lifters blasting themselves all the way up to a week from comp and doing a quick “taper.” Then in the days leading to comp complain of not feeling confident and feeling chronic pain and niggles all for an “overcompensation effect” 🤦🏻‍♂️

Taper earlier, build confidence leading into comp, allow chronic pains to subside and you may have actual predictable outcomes for once and go into comp with confidence!

Okay Each and every lifter needs a different approach on competition day.

A coaches job is not just to show up, give attempts, warm ups and leave.

A coach must watch their lifters, understand what headspace they’re in and if that particular headspace is going to benefit them.

If not, then you as a coach, must steer their current mental state in the right direction that will benefit them most.

This is different for each and every lifter.

Some will benefit from high arousal levels (back slaps, yelling, aggression)

Others will require a calm approach and require breathing techniques, a light hand on the shoulder and positive talk before hitting the platform to bring their arousal levels down.

This also applies to which attempt they’re on.

Are they wasting all of their arousal too early in the day, or on a first attempt? Bring them back down and save it for later.

What are they doing in the warm up room?

Are they isolating themselves, ruminating and focusing too much on what’s to come?

Get them out of that headspace, shift their focus to the present moment and shift seriousness away from that moment.

If a lifter is in the wrong headspace, it doesn’t matter how well they’ve peaked going into the meet, plenty of kilograms will be left on the table.

Find that optimal point of arousal for that lifter and they’re bound to come away with a more enjoyable experience and higher satisfaction.

If there’s one thing that we do well in Plate Lords, it’s building confidence within our athletes and clients.

This is a missed mark in many coaching services.

Just going through the movements, applying the required changes to drive progression, rock up to comp, start again.

We want our athletes and clients to have genuine life changing experiences.

We want to provide them with a positive vision of themselves.

We want to facilitate a paradigm shift within our Plate Lords that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Plate Lords wasn’t created just to make people strong, it was made the actually make a REAL and POSITIVE impact lives.

We care deeply for our clients improvement and every goal reached for our clients is a goal reached for us, this is evident in our coaching and doesn’t need justification.

That’s just how obvious it is.

Confidence isn’t something that your born with, it’s a learnt skill.

Allow us to teach you those skills and approach life both mentally and physically stronger alongside someone who believes in you reaching your full potential!

Being a perfectionist can be one of the greatest barriers to actually making progress in the weight room.

This is something I have seen in myself alongside many other lifters.

Expecting every week to go on an upward and linear trajectory, execting to not have off days, always getting that 8 hours of sleep, having nutrition on point and hitting all macros perfectly, having perfect tech on lifts.

These are all good things to aspire to do, but the issue with being perfectionistic in this regard is quite regularly giving up when things don't go according to plan and if I know life and its obstacles, things wont go according to plan. If things arent exactly perfect then why bother right? Wrong.

In order to make progress your environment and plan does not need to be perfect. Execute the plan to the best of your ability, but expect hiccups and learn to remain consistent even when things inevitably go wrong.

Consistency is where gains are made, not perfectionism.

One of many things lifters over look... Water intake.

There are various reasons for ensuring adequate water intake but ensuring you're hitting your desired amount is the hard part.

Here are some tips to increase your intake:

👉 Buy a larger bottle
👉 Sip continuously throughout the day
👉 Slowly build up to the desired amount
👉 Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables
👉 Drink a large glass of water with each meal
👉 Drink a large quantity of water upon waking (.5 - 1L)

You would be surprised at how not being dehydrated can have some of the most profound impacts upon your training and energy levels, give it a try!
