Part 3 of our nitrogen series gets into the specific nutritional levers that drive efficient nitrogen metabolism - and why getting Mo and Mn right reduces pest pressure while improving crop performance.

Here's how the pathway works:

Molybdenum activates nitrate reductase - the enzyme that converts nitrate into nitrite, the first and rate-limiting step in nitrogen assimilation. Without sufficient Mo, nitrate accumulates in plant tissues because it can't be efficiently converted into organic nitrogen compounds.

Once Mo has done its job, Manganese takes over - activating the enzymes that convert assimilated nitrogen into proteins, enzymes, lignin and plant defence compounds. Stronger cell walls, more phenolics, better resistance to both diseases and insect pests.
The result: less soluble nitrogen accumulating in the phloem. Less nutritional quality for sap-feeding pests. Better use of every unit of nitrogen applied.

🌿 Mo and Mn for your broadacre program - that's TRACE.

Part 2 of our nitrogen series looks at the role of foliar amino acids in improving nitrogen metabolism - and why this matters for both crop performance and sap-feeding pest pressure.

Foliar amino acids aren't a nitrogen source. They act as ready-to-use metabolic building blocks that help crops convert nitrate into proteins, enzymes and chlorophyll more efficiently - reducing the free amino acid accumulation in the phloem that sap-feeding insects depend on.

It's an important hypothesis: it may not be total plant nitrogen that determines aphid susceptibility, but the concentration of free amino acids within the phloem.

Better nitrogen use. Lower free amino acids. Less appeal to sap-feeding pests. Better crop health.

Following on from Part 1 of our nitrogen series - if free amino acid accumulation in the phloem is what drives sap-feeding pest pressure, the question becomes: how do you reduce that accumulation without sacrificing yield?

Foliar amino acids aren't additional nitrogen. They act as ready-to-use metabolic building blocks that help crops assimilate nitrogen more efficiently into proteins, chlorophyll and enzymes - rather than leaving soluble nitrate and free amino acids to accumulate in plant tissues.

πŸ› More nitrogen doesn't always mean a better crop. Sometimes it just means more pests.

Here's something most fertiliser programs don't account for: sap-feeding insects like aphids, whiteflies, psyllids and leafhoppers don't respond to total plant nitrogen. They respond to the concentration of free amino acids in your crop's phloem.

Excess nitrogen - especially readily available nitrate - increases those free amino acids. It promotes soft, succulent tissue growth, suppresses plant defence pathways, and speeds up aphid reproduction and population growth.

The key amino acids driving this: glutamine, glutamate, asparagine and aspartate. When these accumulate in the phloem, pest pressure follows.

The take-home: optimise your nitrogen supply. Don't maximise it.
