October is seniors month here in Victoria.
There are a lot of misconceptions and myths out there around seniors (60+) and exercise. Over the next few days, I will talk to why these myths are not true in some short posts, startiing with our first 2 myths below 👇
Remember exercise can have a profound impact on a seniors life as they age and can literally be life-changing, but unfortunately, a lot of seniors avoid the right kind of exercise because of these untruths!
1. Cardio is the Best Exercise for Aging 🚶
While cardiovascular exercise is beneficial, older adults are often told it’s all they need. However, resistance training is crucial for preserving muscle, bone mass, and metabolic health.
Strength training helps prevent osteoporosis, reduces fall and fracture risk, supports balance, and actually improves heart health by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol.
2. You Can’t Get Stronger or Build Muscle After 60 💪
It’s a myth that muscle gain and strength are only possible in youth. Science shows older adults can build muscle, increase strength, and see meaningful changes—sometimes as dramatically as younger beginners—if they follow a progressive, well-designed program with proper recovery and nutrition.
Studies have shown that previously in active seniors can increase strength and muscle by over 50% in the first few months of training, which can have a profound impact on their lives 💪
If you’re a senior and are confused about exercise and what is best for you, please feel free to reach out, and we can put you on the right path!
