2022 National Youth Championships - Sunshine Coast (Touch Footy)
- Day 1 update
Warm day on the Sunny Coast and our Rams boys are settled in their squads and into play on the first day with some wins and some losses. It's a massive step up from our local affiliate comps and even our Vic State Comp, the tempo of the game is much higher and the kids are all re-calibrating what a rough touch actually means in Queensland!
The scale of this tournament is massive relative to what we see in Vic, with 11 fields operating concurrently, and up to 12 game slots across the day. Refereeing is of a consistently high standard, and each game has 9 referees allocated, 3 who are officiating the game, two assistants who are running water for the refs and are there as a back-up in the event of injury, a ref-qualified scorer for each team and a coaching referee, the "grey ghosts". Collectively, they're not giving an inch, I've seen many interchanges penalised (7-on), and they're not tolerating any back-chat - as a consequence, the games are fast and efficient.
U18s
Our U18 boys (Brodie and Bowen) have been allocated to Pool A of their competition, and had a solid Round 1 win against Tasmania U18 (14:5) which gave them some good confidence at the start of the tournament.
Round 2 saw the boys come up against a very fast and slick NSW Combined High Schools U18, going down to them, but holding the margin (11:4) which was a solid effort against this team. Nice try from Brodie in the middles, showing off his "goosie" that he's been working on in our local Geelong comp over the last few years 🙂
U16s
Round 1 saw our U16s (Rory) drawn against the Central Queensland Bulls U16s, one of the consistently solid performers of the comp, going down to them 10:0.
Round 2 was played under lights and bombing midges against a dominant South Queensland Sharks U16s, who, despite some solid individual performances, ended up running away with the game scoring 19:2 in the end.
U14s
Round 1 was played in the heat of the day and saw our U14 boys (Manny) drawn against a rampant Central Queensland Bulls U14s side who have obviously spent a lot of time playing together. Whilst the boys kept their composure, it was a challenge against the "maroon" onslaught, going down 18:1.
Round 2 say the boys drawn against the Sydney Scorpions U14s, again going down 17:1, but kept trying right till the end. It was a tough day in the office for the U14s, who haven't had the luxury of playing together before, unlike their Day 1 opponents.
At the close (20:00) it had been a big day of Touch Footy, and thankfully no injuries yet amongst these teams, the boys all played really well (despite some of the scorelines) and there was some fantastic skills and passages of play on display.
Will provide further updates and post photos and videos as they come to hand.
(Noting that we've also got a couple of other kids in the Vic squads who play touch in Geelong, Levi (U18, ex Galaxy) and O'Shea (U16, ex Detroit), both boys are putting in some solid performances!)
