CLUB HISTORY

The Coraki Golf Club lies in the heart of the Richmond River Valley in Northern New South Wales and was formed in 1926. The original course was carved from thick Ti-trees around the old Coraki Showground and the greens were sand and were individually fenced around to prevent damage from cattle. This area was also the village common where locals kept their livestock as a large water hole could be found on the course (near the present 8th green).It was not unusual for member to carry a shot gun so as to bag a duck or two on the way round the course. As the course developed J. Nardi was authorised by the committee to scythe the grass for seed. In 1958, after the showground became defunct, N. Lawrie, the local Shire Engineer with a willing band of workers cleared, levelled, blew out tree stumps, designed and constructed the course as it is at the present. The course was fenced which allowed the greens to be planted with grass as one enthusiastic Club Member was allotted a green and it was his duty to top dress, w**d, mow and keep it in good condition as the greens were planted with Queensland Blue Couch. In 1969 a permanent greenkeeper was employed and T. Maroney became the first paid employee and with improved water supply from a storage tank alternate tees were put in 1974 under guidance of E. Scurr who held positions of Captain and President. At present the sweeping undulating fairways make for very pleasant and relaxed walking and a tree planting programme of slash pine, bottle brush with eucalyptus trees along the fairways and in strategic clumps have helped make the course which is 6045 metres long a very demanding one. The first Club House was simply a tent erected on the day but in 1933 a savage storm blew down the local Church of England Parish Hall as this building was the original Church for the Anglicans at Coraki. The Golf Club purchased this building for 20 pounds and this building was erected on two blocks of land owned by N. These blocks were in 1937 purchased for 15 pounds and in 1955 the Club had enough members to be granted a liquor licence and the building was extended to include a kitchen and storage room. Since then further extensions and remodelling have taken place and in 1969 extended the size of the Club. In 1971 the Club extended west to include the outside toilets and patio area and finally in 1978 a dance floor and poker machine room were added to complete the Club House as it is today. In 1976 the Golf Club purchased the whole of the Golf Course from the Lands Department for $6,248.
