Is it safe to do Pilates during my pregnancy? ✨

Absolutely! Individual circumstances can differ this however, for most pregnant women, Pilates is a great contributor to a healthy pregnancy.

Exercises will need to be modified as you progress through each trimester so it is important to find someone who is well equipped to help you.

Pilates is a great way to keep you physically fit during your pregnancy, without too much impact or pressure on your body. Mentally, it is a great form of mindful exercise. It requires your full concentration which forces you to switch off from the rest of your life. This has amazing mental health benefits πŸ™πŸ»

As for your core and pelvic floor - Pilates will teach you how to breathe with your diaphragm (helpful in labour) and help you to build a strong, healthy pelvic floor (also helpful in labour & post-partum)

My suggestion is to look for somewhere that has experience catering to pregnancy. While Pilates is great for pregnant women, some exercises are not. It is important that your instructor is well trained in what you can and can’t do! πŸ™πŸ»πŸ‘πŸΌ

DID YOU KNOW: Regardless of whether you have a vaginal birth or a Caesarian, your pelvic floor is still under pressure during pregnancy. Especially during the last few months of pregnancy! Think of it as a bowling ball weighing down on a muscle for months. It is going to weaken the muscle.

The good news is - there are things we can do to reduce this! πŸ’₯

1. Having a pelvic floor assessment around 20 weeks with a pelvic floor/Women’s Health Physiotherapist. If you are in Brisbane, I can recommend some to you.

2. Doing pelvic floor exercises to maintain a healthy pelvic floor - by healthy, I mean a pelvic floor that can lift AND relax! I can help you with this ✨

3. Constipation and slow bowels is a super common problem in pregnancy. Having your feet on a stool while you sit on the toilet can open up your bowel (Nurse chat - sorry, not sorry πŸ˜…), drinking plenty of water and eating a high fibre/balanced diet (if you aren’t feeling sick 🀒)

4. This is a biggie! When you feel a cough or a sneeze coming on - lift your pelvic floor before you sneeze or cough!!

If you need help learning how to manage your pelvic floor during pregnancy, contact me and I can help! ✨
