OUR HISTORY
The birth of surf lifesaving in Coolum Beach coincides with a spirit of optimism in a tiny, isolated speck of a settlement back in 1919. It was Coolum’s time to 'have a go', after t

he end of the Great War in Europe the year before, and with the Twenties ready to roar full steam ahead. A few things coincided to first put a lifesaving surf reel and rescue line on the beach at Coolum for the Easter holidays that year. There was the arrival of the “father” of Coolum Surf Life Saving, Jack (later known as Pop) Morgan from the beaches of Sydney to farm and the rise of the Royal Life Saving Society with Maroochy River farmer Frank Venning at its forefront. They both responded to Australia's fast-growing love of surf bathing, and the dangers that went with it, as beach holidays started to become ingrained in the national psyche. It was Frank who asked Jack to “do something about life saving at the beach” in the Christmas holidays of 1918 . That invitation saw Jack, the captain of the newly formed local swimming club that competed in Coolum Creek wharf alongside the mail boats, appointed as a paid council lifeguard. Add to the mix the entrepreneurial spirit of Harold Perry-Keene, the owner of local homestead Green Hills who pioneered beachside camping along the foreshore, and you have the genesis of one of Coolum’s great economic benefactors for more than 90 years. The arrival of the local cane tram passenger line, swelled tourist numbers and helped establish an ongoing need for the club. Coolum SLSC struggled to train and maintain enough fit men at first, but kicked on in the 1930s - despite the World Depression - thanks to visionary club officials like Norrie Job and club captain Spencer Browne. Over the years the club has survived major challenges like World War II, when most of its active men joined up to fight and a number died in battle. The surf club came out of mothballs in 1944 with a hardened fighting spirit that was sorely tested on Boxing Day in 1948 when it suffered one of the North Coast’s worst surf tragedies. Two holidaying swimmers and war hero turned lifesaver Dick Lugge drowned during heroic rescue attempts in massive seas. Not long afterwards, the club’s active membership dwindled to just two, but Keith Peterie and Ron Want (both club life members), refused to walk away and trained up local youngsters to carry on the proud tradition of Vigilance and Service, with no lives lost between the flags. It is a legacy of loyalty and faith in one another that continues to this day through the unpaid efforts of about 200 active Coolum lifesavers. In 2010, Coolum SLSC adopted its motto - 'The Heart of Coolum Since 1919... Your Club For Life' - not long after opening its remodeled clubhouse with $2 million worth of improvements, including the best training facilities available. A summary by

🌟 Sting Zillman Award – Service to Surf Sports 🌟

Continuing to recognise our perpetual trophy winners from the 2025/26 Annual Awards Night — congratulations to Sharleen Swan, recipient of the prestigious Sting Zillman Award. 👏

Named in honour of Ray “Sting” Zillman, a passionate surf sports competitor and club leader, this award recognises members who have made a long-term and lasting contribution to Surf Sports and continue to strengthen the section through their dedication and involvement.

Sharleen’s contribution to surf lifesaving spans decades and is nothing short of remarkable. Since gaining her Bronze Medallion in 1988, she has dedicated countless hours across club, branch, state, national and even international levels, supporting all areas of surf sports.

A highly respected Senior Surf Sports Official, Sharleen officiates across multiple disciplines including board riding, IRB, surf rescue, pool rescue and nipper carnivals. She was also the first female official to achieve Level 3 accreditation — a pioneering achievement that has helped pave the way for others in the sport.

Beyond officiating, Sharleen has played a significant role in our club’s leadership, contributing as JAC Secretary, Club Secretary, Surf Sports Officer and Patrol Secretary, while continuing to mentor members and support the development of both athletes and officials.

Known affectionately as “Mother Duck,” Sharleen is always there behind the scenes — guiding, supporting and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Her passion, leadership and commitment to surf sports have left a lasting impact on our club and the broader lifesaving community.

A truly deserving recipient, thank you Sharleen for your incredible service and ongoing contribution 💙👏

Vale – William “Bill” Sitch

It is with great sadness that we advise members of the sudden passing of William “Bill” Michael Sitch, a highly respected Life Member of Coolum Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

Bill joined the Club in 1962 and dedicated more than two decades of outstanding service across club, branch and state levels. Affectionately known as “Mother”, he was a committed and reliable patrolling member, an accomplished competitor, and a passionate contributor to training and assessments.

Bill achieved his Instructor’s Certificate in 1965, Board of Examiners Certificate in 1974, and Advanced Resuscitation Certificate in 1975, reflecting his strong commitment to maintaining high standards in lifesaving.
He was also actively involved in competition, including Beach Relays, Beach Sprints and surf events, and was part of successful Sunshine Coast Branch champion teams.

Within the Club, Bill served as Assistant Treasurer and made a valued contribution to the development of the organisation. More broadly, he played an important leadership role in surf lifesaving across Queensland, serving as a Sunshine Coast Branch Delegate, District Supervisor (Area 1), Secretary of the State Board of Examiners, and State Secretary of the State Medical Panel.

Bill’s contribution to lifesaving governance, training and medical development was significant, and his legacy continues to be felt both at Coolum and across the wider surf lifesaving movement.

The family will be holding a private service in Brisbane. Bill’s ashes will be spread at Coolum Beach later in the year, at which time members will be invited to pay their respects. Further information will be shared once arrangements have been confirmed with the family.

On behalf of the Club, we extend our sincere condolences to Bill’s wife, Neesa, family and friends and thank him for his lifelong commitment to our organisation.

Lest We Forget.

Beautiful conditions meant fast-paced racing and some great action shots. 📸🔥
Ocean Roar gets more competitive each round in the lead-up to State Titles, and Coolum are holding their own. 👏

Round 4 is this weekend at Kurrawa, the last chance for the team to show their skills before State Titles. 💪🏆🌊

🌟 Dick Lugge Patrol Award – Honouring Patrol Service & Ethos 🌟

Introducing one of our perpetual trophy winners from the 2025/26 Annual Awards Night – congratulations to Michael “Mick” Clark, recipient of the prestigious Dick Lugge Patrol Award.

This award is named in honour of Richard "Dick" Lugge, a dedicated lifesaver who tragically lost his life on patrol on Boxing Day, 1948 - making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

This award embodies the values he stood for – selflessness, courage, and a deep commitment to beach safety.

Since becoming a member in 2021 Mick has completed more than 630 patrol and operations support hours including over 120 hours of water safety service supporting our Nippers program. He is also a key contributor to operational support through regular Wave Runner 17 shifts. In addition, Mick shares the role of Water Safety Officer each Sunday morning at Nippers, where he enjoys contributing alongside his family.

Mick’s dedication, reliability, and commitment to keeping our beaches safe make him a highly worthy recipient of this award.

A deserving recipient of this award, Mick’s dedication and consistency continue to make a real difference both on and off the beach.

Thank you Mick for your ongoing commitment 💙👏
