Coolamon Golf
It was another excellent weekend for Coolamon Golf. Despite the recent rain rejuvenating the course it has left it considerably softer. This added to the colder weather has made the game more difficult especially for those who rely on a little run, and for those who canβt hit the ball further than Stevie Wonder can see, itβs almost impossible. Aah well
Saturdayβs comp winner was Geoff Wilson. Despite adding his name to the the bulging Mono file he managed an outstanding 42 points. The big winners, though were Dan Lagan and Pete McCallum who won each of their Matchplay games convincingly to advance to the semi finals. The Kiwi pumped a rather sheepish Tom Goss 5/4 while Pete dominated The Corn 3/2. Both winners also appeared in the ball rundown along with Marty Crawford. Six time Club Champion, Bruce Chant added the pink ball to his illustrious list of golfing achievements.
Another impressive field of 27 dusted off the clubs for Sundayβs comp. Mark Hardy continued his recent vintage form with 38 points to romp away with the money. Mark has won enough recently to add a west wing to his almost completed mansion. Matching the east wing his humble abode will shortly be able to take flight. Runner up with 35 points was a hobbling Mick OβBrien, fresh from besmirching Australiaβs good name in Europe while Grub Broadhead, Bruce Chant (from the S*x Pistols to Mozart), Bryan Buchanan, Danny Milne and Ian Nottley all featured in the prize rundown. The pink ball was gleefully accepted by Sylvia Spring.
Novelty prizes both days included Dan Lagan, Bruce Chant, Ray Jennings, Danny Milne, , Geoff Wilson, Richie Jennings, Ann Webber, The Grubster and Sandy Wilson while the raffle prizes were won by Geoff Wilson, putting the cream on his Saturday score and Tom Goss, applying some balm to his sound thrashing on Sunday.
The earth shaking news though was Richie Jennings astounding feat of simultaneous air swings. Air swings are reasonably common but double complete misses are as rare as wisdom and sense in Canberra. It was so unprecedented it set off a fierce debate in the club afterwards. There was a strong and immediate push to rename the Mono file the Dickies. Fortunately tradition reigned. Yes the name βDickiesβ does exude a certain rustic charm and it has a beautiful melodious lilt, But the original Mono was unparalleled, the Mozart of all air swings. Unleashed with style and, dare I say it, a touch of elan, it bought grown men to their knees and reduced even the most unemotional to tears. A Mono it remains and a Mono it will be forever.
This weekend we have the huge four person charity day for Can assist which has a karmic feel considering the recent passing of Luke Fifield from pancreatic cancer. His funeral was one of the biggest, (and most liquid) in recent memory which is a testament to the high regard in which he was held. The following Saturday is the date of the annual Coolamon tournament. We are hoping for big fields on both days.
