National Volunteers Week 2026 (18–24 May)

This National Volunteers Week, the NT Polocrosse Association proudly celebrates the incredible people who make our sport possible. From our dedicated club volunteers to umpires, timekeepers, the golden voices on the microphone, members, and behind-the-scenes helpers- you are the heart and soul of polocrosse in the Northern Territory.

Whether you’re maintaining our grounds, tackling the fix-it jobs, organising fundraising, supporting events, or serving on our executive team, your time, effort, and passion keep our sport alive and thriving. Quite simply, without our volunteers, there would be no polocrosse.

Thank you for everything you do- your commitment, teamwork, and community spirit do not go unnoticed. This week, we celebrate you!

Over the past few weeks, we have been doing a lot of listening, talking, and number crunching to understand whether we could confidently deliver the Australian Polocrosse Nationals this year.

This has included a national competitor survey, discussions with all States, and ongoing communications with key stakeholders.

After taking everything into account, the Northern Territory Polocrosse Association and Polocrosse Australia have made the difficult decision to postpone the Nationals
to June 2027.

We know this is disappointing news. There has been a huge amount of effort already put in by players, families, sponsors, volunteers and supporters, and we do not take that lightly.

But the reality is, the current environment is making things really tough. The sudden rise and uncertainty of fuel costs, concerns around fuel availability and long-distance travel with horses, combined with the indication of reduced participation all point to one thing: we would not be able to deliver the kind of Nationals that everyone expects and deserves.

Postponing gives us the best chance to do this properly. It means we can protect the
quality of the competition, look after our people and horses, and make sure the event is strong, well supported and something we can all be proud of.

Please refer to the official website for the event and Polocrosse Australia for further event updates.

This news article brings back memories of our road trip to WA for the 1980 Capel Nationals. Ceduna locals referred to them as muppys, they were Everywhere😝😝. The horses were very unsettled and I don't think I slept a wink worried "they would love your hair to nest in Mary!!" We were still finding them in gear on our return to the NT! Those were the days.

Mouse numbers in Western Australia are already at plague proportions, and a researcher says immediate action is needed to stop them from getting completely out of control.

STORY: https://ab.co/4bIRErL

It comes as residents of regional communities say the number of mice in their homes is unprecedented, with mice chewing through plastic containers, milk cartons and food containers.

CSIRO research officer Steve Henry, who has studied reported mouse numbers in paddocks from Geraldton to Esperance, said the figures were alarming.

"I'm really concerned," Mr Henry said.

"When you're getting over two to three hundred mice per hectare, then you've really got cause for concern.

"They're counting between three and four thousand burrows [six to eight thousand mice] per hectare in some locations."
