We are very sad to let you know that former player, Katie Mackey, passed away on 21st August following a diagnosis with acute myeloid leukaemia in February.

Katie played biddy ball, domestic and representative basketball with Collingwood up until Under 21s. She was a keen competitor who always did her best for the team.

Her sister Lexi also plays with the club, most recently in the Big V Women’s team. Katie’s twin sister Isabel also played biddy ball but passed away before she got to join a team. Katie’s parents Melissa and Simon have been great supporters of the club, with Melissa coaching for many years.

We extend our deepest condolences to Melissa, Simon and Lexi. In memory of Katie, a fund has been set up to donate to Leukaemia and Cancer Research. Here is the link if you would like to make a donation: https://www.mycause.com.au/page/403290/in-loving-memory-of-katie-mackey

In May 2015, over 100 All Stars players, families and supporters attended the Yarra Council budget meeting at Fitzroy Town Hall. Collingwood Basketball Committee member Chris Walton spoke to the council and explained how our club supports the City of Yarra's strategic goals, and why we were disappointed that the Council’s budget had no funding towards an Indoor Sporting Facility and the Council’s strategic plan had no plans for an Indoor Sporting Facility to commence before 2022 (7 years away). We sought $25,000 funding for further studies to establish the viability of the Collingwood College proposal and $3.1 million to be set aside towards the stadium. We couldn’t wait till 2022!

After a lot more campaigning and development of a business plan, in May 2017, Richard Wynne, Minister for Planning and member for Richmond, visited Collingwood College to announce the Andrews Labor Government had fully funded the $8.3M development of a three court stadium at Collingwood College as part of the 2017 Victorian State Budget!
Club President Caroline Dever said the Club was thrilled to have gained a new home for 1,200 plus players. “The Club and Collingwood College have been campaigning for this development for over a decade. This is a momentous day not just for the Club and Collingwood College, but more broadly for the local community, families and children.”
“The Club wishes to particularly thank the Hon Richard Wynne who has been a strong, vocal supporter of this development, and been instrumental in securing full funding from the Andrews Labor Government”.
“There are many other people to thank. We have worked closely with Collingwood College, especially the Principal, Dale Perichon and School Council President, Cath Smith and Basketball Victoria, who have lobbied for this development. We have also received tremendous support from several parents, especially Sally Jeavons from leisure Planners. The City of Yarra has also provided its support for the development,” said Ms Dever.
