My aim for dancers in coaching sessions is based on my training at the Australian Ballet School; we were taught that ballet technique principles are the foundation of everything. Why is this? Because ballet technique enables dancers to develop control and confidence in their movements which allows them to trust their bodies, experience freedom and become a truly expressive performer.
Nurturing strong technique is one of my passions; I assist dancers to learn about their bodies, alignment and muscle activation. I focus on helping students become mindful in their practice and break down steps to help ingrain the details through muscle memory. I teach students how movements work so they understand the reasons behind what they are doing, which is key for motivation. I discuss mindset and give students strategies, such as problem solving, for greater self-learning. This enhances their progress as they can continue to implement the skills on their own, as well as in coaching sessions. Most importantly, I use positive teaching methods to promote self-confidence and enhance the student’s unique strengths.
