🏋️ STOP TRYING TO MAX OUT EVERY SESSION

Strength training isn't about seeing how much you can lift every time you walk through the door.

Most sessions are about doing the work — hitting your prescribed sets, reps and loads, practising good technique and building strength over time.

Then, occasionally, we test.

A 3RM. A 5RM. A benchmark lift.

That's when you find out whether all those weeks of consistent training have actually made you stronger.

Training builds the strength. Testing measures it.

You don't need to prove yourself every session. You just need to keep showing up and doing the work.

A couple of weeks ago at HYROX Perth I saw a few people walking around with “ASK ME ABOUT PEPTIDES” written across the back of their shirts.

And no, I don't think they wanted to talk about insulin.

Synthetic peptides are suddenly EVERYWHERE in the fitness conversation. Recovery. Injury healing. Muscle growth. Fat loss. Anti-ageing. Better performance.

The claims are pretty appealing.

But how good is the evidence? How much do we actually know about the risks? And when you're buying something through a largely unregulated grey market, how do you even know the thing in the vial is what it says on the label?

After listening to a really interesting podcast on the subject, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole.

I'm not convinced peptides are rubbish. I'm not convinced people choosing to use them are idiots either. Some of this stuff may eventually turn out to be incredibly useful.

But I do think the questions are currently a LOT more interesting than the answers.

🥊 TRAINING ISN’T A TEST EVERY DAY

Not every boxing session needs to be about throwing every punch as hard and as fast as possible.

Training is about building your skills, fitness, conditioning and ability to keep working when things get tough.

Some sessions you’ll push hard. Other sessions are about technique, movement, timing and learning to hold your pace.

Then there are the days when it’s time to test yourself.

That’s when you find out what all those rounds of training have actually built.

Train consistently. Test occasionally. Keep improving.

TRAINING vs TESTING 🏋️♂️

We test things at Round 1.

Sometimes we need numbers for the next training block. Sometimes we simply want to measure progress and find out whether the work we've been doing has actually worked.

But testing and training have different jobs.

Our 5km a Day crew are a perfect example.

Running 5km every day? Training.

Trying to run your fastest possible 5km every day? That's testing...and probably a pretty good way to make sure you don't finish the challenge.

Most days, the goal is to do the work, recover and come back ready to do it again.

But when it IS testing day?

Test.

Don't get halfway through, decide you're a couple of seconds off your target and pull the pin.

Buckle up and find out what you've got.

And no — "I said I'm training, not testing" is NOT your new excuse for taking it easy in class. 😂

Hard and maximum aren't the same thing.

This week's blog is about knowing the difference.

🔥 HYROX doesn’t create your weaknesses. It exposes them.

You might feel incredibly fit in training, but add running, stations, fatigue, a clock and competition — and suddenly you find out exactly where you need to improve.

Maybe it’s your running.
Maybe it’s your lunges.
Maybe it’s your pacing or transitions.

Whatever it is, that’s valuable information.

Don’t explain it away. Train it.

💪 Strength isn’t just about what you can lift when everything goes right.

Put yourself under pressure and weaknesses start to show — technique, control, endurance, or simply a movement you haven't trained enough.

The good news?

You now know what needs work.

Don’t be frustrated by the weakness. Use it as information.

Identify it. Train it. Get stronger.

🥊 Competition doesn’t create weaknesses. It reveals them.

When the pressure is on, the rounds get harder, fatigue kicks in and suddenly those little things you’ve been getting away with in training become obvious.

That’s not failure — that’s information.

Your job is to find the weakness, work on it and come back better.

Train. Test. Learn. Improve.

42 DAYS.

We’ve got something new coming to Round 1 Fitness this October.

It’s not a weight-loss challenge.
It’s not a transformation competition.
And you definitely don’t need to be the fittest person in the gym to take part.

It’s about showing up.

Classes. Extras. A few surprises. A few things you’ll have to earn. And 42 days to see what you can do.

We’ll start revealing more over the next couple of weeks.

For now, save the dates:

12 OCTOBER → 20 NOVEMBER

Competition doesn’t create weakness. It reveals it.

A week on from HYROX Perth, I’ve spent a bit of time looking beyond the finishing time and into what the race actually told me.

What held up? What had improved? And where did things start to fall away?

My first HYROX back in 2024 exposed a pretty obvious weakness in my running preparation. This time around, the running held together significantly better.

Great. The work worked.

But there were other areas that weren’t as strong — and that’s useful too.

That’s one of the best things about competition. Whether it’s HYROX, footy, boxing, running or simply testing yourself in the gym, pressure has a way of showing you where you really are.

The competition didn’t create the weakness.

It just turned the lights on.

This week’s blog is about looking beyond the result, paying attention to what competition teaches you...and then getting back to work.

🏆 HYROX — WHAT AN AMAZING EFFORT! 🏆

A huge congratulations to everyone from Round 1 Fitness who got out there and took on HYROX last weekend! 🔥

Whether it was your first HYROX, you were chasing a PB, competing as a team, or simply challenging yourself to get through it — you should all be incredibly proud of what you achieved. 💪🏼

It was so awesome seeing so many of you out there giving it everything, and the support from our Round 1 crew was just as amazing! 👏🏼❤️

I asked everyone to send through their photos so we could put together a post to celebrate you all. I only received a handful, but I wanted to share these anyway and give a massive shoutout to those who sent them through.

And to everyone who competed but isn’t pictured — we see you, we’re proud of you and we’re celebrating you too! 🙌🏼

Congratulations again to every single one of you. What an effort! 🏃🏼‍♀️🔥🏋🏼‍♂️
