When someone has been hurt once, the world no longer feels neutral.

A rope on the floor is no longer just a rope.
It becomes a warning. A memory. A threat in disguise.

Thatโ€™s what this proverb is pointing to:

โ€œHe who has been bitten by a snake fears a rope.โ€

Itโ€™s not saying the person is weak.
Itโ€™s saying the nervous system learns fast.

After a painful experience, the mind starts scanning for anything that resembles it:
a tone that sounds like the last argument,
a silence that feels like the last abandonment,
a small mistake that looks like the beginning of the same disaster

And even when the present is safeโ€ฆ the body can still react like it isnโ€™t.
