Today Pat and Curtis went to a novice meet, kindly hosted by the Strength Haven, both going 170/110 for squat and bench, and then demonstrating that the competition isn't over till the bar hits the floor, Curtis pulled 175 and Pat 205.

There were many strong people there, from 14 to 50 or more, and the biggest cheers came not for the biggest lifts, but the grindiest ones. We've all been there and know what it means, whether it's 45 or 245kg.

Today we had our fourth seminar for the year, where dietician Jane from came along to tell us about the importance of proper nutrition for training. It was a good seminar, and we can recommend Jane for teaching groups or individuals.

We view physical training as an educational process, with terms focusing on particular physical qualities, and guest speakers and coaches coming along to present and give new perspectives.

At ACE, we want you to come and become generally more useful and harder to kill. That's why we charge more and limit numbers. It's less money, but more results and integrity.

If you're at all interested in fitness, you'll hear about all sorts of fancy and scientific-sounding stuff. A revolution in fitness, supposedly, every week. But the basics were figured out thousands of years ago.

I daresay Young Hercules' model wasn't doing a Sixpack Abs in Thirty Days programme. He will have been a gladiator or other athlete - and working out for years on end.

Whether your interest be fitness or something else, learn from those who came before you. And be sceptical of those offering anything new and revolutionary.

“By the tetrad system we mean a cycle of four days, each one of which is devoted to a different activity. The first day prepares the athlete; the second is an all-out trial; the third is relaxation; and the fourth is a medium-hard workout. Regarding exercise of the first day, it is made up of short, intense movements which stir up the athlete and prepare him for the hard workout to follow on the next day. This strenuous day is an all-out test of his potential. We've recently had a couple of new women join, cementing the women's majority at the gym. This makes all our regular sessions (Sun 1300 and 1600, Mon-Thu 1900) full.
Anyone who'd like to join now can either join the waiting list, or if you can come and bring at least one person with you, we'll open up new session times Mon-Thu 1600.
Message us to come for the training and stay for the banter.
