Hit the beach early and chilling by the pool and bbq…still doesn’t feel quite ‘right’ but as this is now my 22nd Christmas here, at age 45, it’s gotta feel like the “new normal” soon enough! Wishing you all a wonderful time with friends, family and loved ones wherever you are. Thanks for making this year truly special and for always believing in bringing it all back ❤️👍💪

The perfect pull through from swimmers 👍🏻.
At Swim Smooth we use the smiley face palm visualisation. 😊.
Imagine you have a smiley face drawn on the palm of your hand. The person behind you should always be able to see that smiley face. .
Focusing on your palm facing backwards ensures that you have maximum forward propulsion in your freestyle stroke! .

I know a lot of you guys in the Perth Squad love Crowie, so here you go Gary Couanis!

I know a lot of you guys in the Perth Squad love Crowie, so here you go Gary Couanis!

Today we're joined on the podcast by 5-time Ironman World Champion, Craig ("Crowie") Alexander.

Crowie was the 2008, 2009, 2011 Ironman Triathlon World Champion and previous course record holder (8:03:56 in 2011), and the 2006 (inaugural) and 2011 70.3 World Champion. In 2011 he won both the 70.3 and the full Ironman World Championships. Needless to say - he's a beast, but best of all, he's an absolute gentleman too!

Craig was humbled when Ironman legend and six-time World Champion Dave Scott lauded him as “the first true men’s champion the sport has seen in years.”

The most important thing to Craig is family. He is beyond proud of his wife (and the love of his life) Nerida, and his three amazing kids, Lucy, Austin and Lani. Everything Craig does starts and ends at home with his family. Crowie’s won a lot of titles over the years but the one he likes best is ‘Daddy’. As an aside from us, we've only met Crowie once face-to-face but recall how genuine and approachable he was and when the opportunity to record this podcast with the great man came up, he didn't hesitate, such is his show of great character - he's very much "the people's champion" as you'll hear in the first 60 second intro.

Post-retirement, Craig now runs his highly successful coaching program SansEGO (which basically means "without ego") which we believe, at it's heart, is a philosophy we can all learn from (details at: https://www.sansego.co ). A lot of people talk about “life balance” but Craig really does walk the walk, not just talk the talk and his information from his website below is well worth a deeper dive, especially at this period in time of extreme uncertainty and worry:

"His load was extraordinarily heavy but he carried it with methodical focus and balance…and Craig seemed to find more and more comfort with his confidence in simply letting be, be. Alexander’s most impressive talents are not found in his swim, bike, or run competence. Instead, his unique ability to clear the mind’s clutter and make good decisions has been the key ingredient to his success on and off the racecourse. And this key to finding clarity for the 5 x Ironman/70.3 World Champion was getting the life balance"

Go Manue!

When life throws you lemons, make lemonade!
May 1st 2020 will forever stand out in my mind as the day we were so fortunate to be able to return to some sense of “normality” with respect to our swim coaching here in Perth. We’ve been decimated by the last 6 weeks and the effect of COVID-19 will be long lasting for small coaching businesses like our own right around the world for a long time. And whilst you might be sat there reading this frustrated that you’re still in lockdown and unable to swim or unable to coach, just know that there is light at the end of this tunnel. We’ve had a taste of it here today in Perth and if you click our BIO link at the top of this page, you’ll see the full format of what we’ve initiated today to abide by all current restrictions still in place here in Perth, so that hopefully, possibly, maybe, just maybe we can pass on a little of our good fortune your way and stimulate some ideas on how you might be able to get back on track whenever that might be.
I spoke pretty candidly on my personal FaceBook page a few days ago (friend me and you’ll see it “Paul Newsome”) of how this whole episode has honestly made me feel, and it’s not all positivity and shiny and roses smelling like perfume. Quite the opposite in fact. I’ve been bloody scared (and I still am!) but in burying my head in trying to help our coaches, and other coaches right around the planet get back on track, I’ve felt some sense of duty, of purpose - everything in fact that I felt I lost as soon as the pools closed and we were forced to stop working with our swimmers for an indefinite period.
I know you’re hurting, I know that if you’re in the UK and the US specifically, you’ve still got an extended period of the waiting game ahead of you because we had a rather sobering webinar with our team of 50 international coaches last night - it was hard to hear if I’m absolutely honest because when you can’t see it, it’s really hard to appreciate it.
I’m not going to tell you to “look on the bright side” because deep down I know that if you’re a coach or a swimmer, you will be feeling loss and sometimes it’s ok to lean into that feeling. See you on the other side...

Enjoy!
