Vale – John O’Connell
The Claremont Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Club great John O’Connell at the age of 94.
One of the most influential figures in our Club’s history, John's contribution to Claremont spanned more than seven decades as a player, administrator, leader, mentor and passionate supporter.
A star ruckman and forward, he played 156 games for Claremont, represented Western Australia on nine occasions, and enjoyed an outstanding career with Geelong before returning to his beloved Tigers.
John's impact extended far beyond his playing days. He served as President of the Club from 1992 to 1997, remained a valued board member and volunteer for many years thereafter, and dedicated countless hours to helping secure the future of Claremont Football Club. His service to football was recognised with induction into the WA Football Hall of Fame in 2012.
John leaves a lasting legacy at Claremont and across Western Australian football. He was a respected leader, trusted voice and passionate advocate for the game throughout his life.
Our sincere condolences are extended to Pam, his children and the entire O’Connell family, along with his many friends, teammates and colleagues. John will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all at Claremont Football Club.
