It has been some time since we have provided an update regarding the TJC. Although the social media page may have appeared quiet, significant work has been occurring behind the scenes.

The TJC, Hammer & Co., and Racing Queensland have been collaborating to determine the most effective solution to address the issues with the track surface. Following many hours of consultation and research, it was agreed that trial patches would be installed on the track to enable thorough testing. Five trial patches have been established, including synthetic fibres, natural fibres, and a new sand.

The purpose of this initiative is to evaluate how each material performs under local climatic conditions, to develop the appropriate maintenance procedures for each, and to conduct testing that will determine which material best meets the requirements for horse training and racing.

Over the coming months, we will work closely with Racing Queensland, QRIC, industry representatives, and our contractor. This process will involve testing, conducting gallops, jump-outs, and multiple mornings of trackwork to ensure that we select the most suitable surface for a safe and sustainable return to racing.

We recognise that the community is eager to see racing resume, and we assure you that our enthusiasm matches, if not exceeds, your own. However, it is essential that we complete this stage with the utmost care to ensure not only the resumption of racing, but to set the track up for the club’s future growth for many generations to come.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Racing Queensland for their continued support, and to Hammer & Co. for their unwavering commitment to this project.

Please stay tuned for further updates in the near future.

At our upcoming Towers Cup Race Day, homage will be paid by the Allingham Family of Fletchervale Pastoral Company to the history that is behind the Basalt Amateur Hack Club. An unfamiliar name to many, it is a club that holds a wealth of history for the agricultural industry within the Charters Towers region.

The Basalt Amateur Hack Club was located at Fletchervale Station, Charters Towers. Ernest Bassingwaightes great, great, great grandfather purchased Bluff Downs in 1872. The property was stocked with cattle and horses transported up from Brisbane Valley - the horses being some of those whose descendants would go on to become foundation sires of Toomba Stockhorses. Toomba was acquired by the family in 1904 and became an outstation of Bluff Downs. During this time, social activities were limited and were solely centred around horses in many aspects. E.E.D White (Ernest's Grandfather) was chairman of the Basalt Amateur Hack Club when the club was established in the early 1900s and had a handful of picnic racehorses he would race. Meetings would consist of week-long campouts and a two day meeting held at Fletchervale Station on the banks of the Fletcher River.

Describing scenes on the Fletcher River, an excerpt written by 'Ceatus' from the Townsville Daily Bulletin, published 26 September 1922 writes: 'Racehorses, pack mules, ponies of all shapes and sizes were in mobs, and the clink, jingle of bells and movement of it all was invigorating. Drovers were welcomed, tents were unpacked and erected while you waited. Thirsty horses watered and turned out. Outfits from Toomba, Maryvale, Niall, Cargoon, Bluff Downs, Hillgrove and many other places were on the camp on Wednesday evening and the meeting of these bushmen was pleasing to witness while their hospitality was unbounded.' This article is located on Trove - I encourage everyone to read the beautifully written piece on the nature of these bush race meetings. It will make you long for a simpler time. A plaque recovered from a race day in 1913 shows a trophy presented by H Allingham to the winner of the District Plate - who happens to be E.E.D White and Black Cat.

Thank you to the Fletchervale Family for supporting the Towers Jockey Club and bringing forth the history of the region at our upcoming race day with the Basalt Amateur Hack Club Bangle Race.

Thank you must go to the team at Tracpower and Kubota for their generous sponsorship in supplying with endless support and advice for our club tractor as well as a set of forks!

This may seem like a very minor thing, but for a country club who fundraises and sources grants for buying items for the club, being supported by a team like Tracpower and Kubota is a godsend! And without a tractor, a large majority of club maintenance and movement on race day is simply not possible!

Thank you Tracpower and Kubota for your support of the Towers Jockey Club! It is greatly appreciated!
