28/04/2020
Hi again Team,
We hope that all of our awesome community has been keeping well during this uncertain time.
With the most recent Government update providing direction that there will be an easement of current restrictions occurring from midnight Friday 01/05, I would like to provide you all with an update regarding what these new developments mean for Chandler Tennis Centre during the continuing COVID-19 Pandemic.
Chandler Tennis continues to be guided by the advice of Tennis Queensland and on a larger scale, Tennis Australia. I have just been made aware that following a meeting between the Tennis Queensland Board of Directors yesterday evening, limited tennis activities can now begin to take place again, under strict guidelines and criteria, as of midnight Friday 01/05. Tennis Queensland’s statement reads:
"Tennis Queensland statement: limited play to return in May
Tennis is set to return across the state from midnight Friday 1st May 2020, following a meeting of the Tennis Queensland Board of Directors on Monday evening.
Upon reviewing the latest health advice, the Board recommends that all clubs now review their capability to provide a playing environment that follows Tennis Australia's Guidelines for Community Play stringently. Once reviewed and confident that this is possible, the Tennis Queensland Board of Directors supports the reopening of your tennis courts.
To help clubs prepare, we have created a club self-assessment checklist for re-opening that will ensure your club has everything in place ahead of your courts opening and to minimise the risk of spread at your venue.
The Tennis Queensland Board will continue to meet weekly to review our position and make further recommendations if required.
As the situation changes rapidly, always stay up to date on the latest health advice at the Queensland Health website.
Tennis Queensland"
Chandler Tennis will meet tomorrow, 29/04 to discuss the requirements set out by Tennis Queensland and Tennis Australia in the ‘Checklist for Re-opening’ and the ‘Community Tennis Guidelines for Continued Play’ to assess whether our club meets the stringent criteria for reopening and if we have the capacity to safely resume some activity. We will be in contact with our clients as soon as possible following those discussions to advise you all of the outcome. At this stage, as per the guidelines, if Chandler successfully fulfils the criteria to reopen safely, private one-on-one coaching and court hire of only two participants or a family group can take place. Chandler will also be required to implement restrictions regarding how these activities take place, should we meet the criteria to resume.
We have fielded a few questions during our shut down period regarding the operation of other centres, so I would like to quickly provide some clarity around our decision to cease operation while others are still providing tennis services. We are aware that other centres have continued to operate in a limited capacity since Tennis Queensland, our governing body, provided recommendation on the 27/03 that Tennis Centres Queensland wide should cease ALL operation until further notice. Prior to this advice, Tennis Queensland had been in constant contact with our centre and fully supported our decision to continue operation in a restricted capacity until it was no longer safe to do so. Upon receiving the advice from TQ on 27/03 and monitoring the recommendations from Government channels ourselves, we concluded that in the interest of the health and safety of our staff, students, clients and that of the general community we would close our doors temporarily from midnight 28/03 until it was safe to resume any kind of operation again. The recommendations from TQ were only that, recommendations, which is why other centres have used their discretion in deciding if they would continue operation and if they did continue business, how they would deliver their services.
Chandler Tennis has always considered the well-being of our entire community to be at the forefront of our decision-making process during this overwhelming time. With this consideration, we felt that although we may have been able to offer some services in the same restricted capacity as other centres, we strongly believed that although the decision to cease business would undoubtedly have financial consequences, the socially responsible course of action was to shut our doors for a short while for the sake of the bigger picture.
We will be in contact with all of our clients as soon as we receive confirmation that we can begin delivering all of our programs again. We have a plan of attack of how we would like to roll out the resumption of classes and groups, however with the uncertainty of the entire situation, we cannot guarantee that all of our programs will recommence at the same time. This unfortunately means that family groups may find that one child may be able to begin lessons again but a sibling’s start date may be slightly later on in the term.
I am continually monitoring the situation closely and I endeavour to update you all with as much information as possible as soon as I become aware of new developments. I know how keen we ALL are to pick up the sticks, get back out there and hit some balls! I thank you all for your patience and understanding during this time.
I would also like to finish by extending a very sincere thank you on behalf of the club to Tennis Queensland for their assistance and guidance during the uncertainty of the current climate. As a small business, we have felt wholly respected and supported during this entire process and it truly demonstrates what a wonderfully inclusive sport we are involved in!
Your Sincerely,
Samuel Neilson
