What Is a Pre Shot Routine in Golf? ⛳️
A pre shot routine is the consistent sequence of mental and physical actions a golfer takes before every shot. Whether it’s a drive, iron shot, chip, or putt. It usually includes:
- Assessment: Evaluating distance, lie, wind, slope, and target.
- Club selection: Choosing the right club for the situation.
- Visualisation: Seeing the ball flight and landing spot in your mind.
- Practice swings: Feeling the tempo and swing path.
- Alignment: Setting feet, hips, and shoulders to the target.
- Commitment & ex*****on: Stepping in and swinging without hesitation.
Why Is a Pre Shot Routine Important?
1️⃣ Improves Consistency
Golf is a game of repetition. A routine creates a repeatable process, which leads to more consistent ball striking.
2️⃣ Reduces Anxiety
When you’re nervous, especially on the first tee, having a routine keeps your mind focused on the process instead of the outcome.
3️⃣ Enhances Focus
It prevents distractions (crowd noise, bad previous shots, score pressure) and narrows your attention to the task at hand.
4️⃣ Builds Confidence
When you commit to the same routine every time, you develop trust in your preparation.
5️⃣ Creates a Mental “Reset Button”
After a bad shot, your routine helps you reset emotionally before the next one.
