900 yards was on the cards today at CRC.

A good number of shooters were on the firing line putting their long range marksmanship to the test at our longest distance, with clear weather and a very mild breeze making for a good day of shooting.

It was one of those days where the wind flags were not telling anything and shooters instead had to rely primarily on the mirage.

In F-Open John Peters took first place with a clean 120.10, with Jason Bennett right on his heels with 119.11.

Charlie Prebble continued his good form from last week in F-Standard, taking top spot again with a solid 118.7.

In Sporter/Hunter Brett Read was running solo, shooting clean again with 100.16.

Many of our other regular shooters spent their time on the firing line doing load development in preparation for some upcoming prize meets.

Next Saturday will be a practise shoot only due to the Kings Birthday long weekend. Distance to be shot to be determined on the day by the attendees.

Finally, the club has recommenced accepting P650 attendances for anyone wanting to give long range shooting a try but doesn't have a fi****ms licence yet. Enquiries can be made through this page or through our website.

Happy shooting and hope to see you on the range.

Today saw CRC shooting on the 800 yard line.

A decent number of brave souls were on hand to deal with the miserable weather conditions, with periodic light showers throughout the early afternoon making visibility on target poor at times. However during the breaks in the rain visibility improved and conditions became quite conducive for shooting, especially later in the afternoon when the sun finally made an appearance. The score sheets proved this with some absolute banger performances put in across the board.

In F-Open, Jason Bennett took top spot with an outstanding 120.15, with John Peters and David Piddington only one point behind with 119.11 and 119.07 respectively.

Charlie Prebble came out on top in F-Standard with an impressive 118.11. Watching him early on stacking rounds on top of one another in the Super Centre was a sight to see, especially for a 308 Win.

Robert Avery in Target Rifle would have shot clean if it wasn’t for one pesky flyer, finishing on 97.11.

In Sporter/Hunter Brett Read shot clean to take first place with 100.18, including a first stage 50.10. Two of our soon to be new members, Dean Phillips and Shannon VS were not far behind, both shooting clean as well with 100.15 and 100.14 respectively. It looks like this class will be getting some serious competition. All were shooting the now ubiquitous 6.5 Creedmoor. Rag on the cartridge all you want but it gets the job done.

Next week CRC will be shooting at 900 yards. Hopefully the weather will be better so we can see more of you on the range.

It's was a bit quieter than usual this Saturday on the 700 yard line with many of the CRC and West Wallsend regulars competing elsewhere over the weekend. This did however give the shooters who did come the opportunity to put plenty of rounds down range.

Conditions on the day were trickier than the wind flags showed with a the moderate mirage coming and going throughout the afternoon, meaning shooters had to be quick to make the necessary point of aim adjustments when required.

Most shooters on the the line used the day as a glorified practise session so I won't bore everyone with listing any scores this week. The link to the Hex scoring system is on out website for anyone interested.

Next week will we'll be shooting at 800 yards, which should see a full complement back on the firing line.

Happy shooting and hope to see you on the range.

Saturday, 2nd May saw CRC back at the 500 yard line. Fairly benign conditions were on hand to help shooters, with only a mild intermittent breeze and accompanying mirage to contend with.

First of all, congratulations to CRC's own John Peters for his dual wins last week in Sydney at the ANZAC Day OPM & City of Sydney Long Range Championships in F-Open Class. He continued his good form this week with a solid 119.9 despite not using his primary comp rig.

Competition in F-Standard was tight as usual with Ed Wright coming out on top with a very consistent 115.12. James Christian followed closely in second with 113.5.

David Avery in F-TR again showed what the diminutive 223 Rem is capable of if handled correctly, dropping only one point to shoot an outstanding 119.8, including a first stage possible of 60.4.

In Sport/Hunter PCO Brett Read managed to take advantage of a calmer weather period later in the day to shoot a 50.10 in his second stage, finishing on top with 100.17.

Finally its been good to see a number of shooters visiting these last few weeks and trying their hand at the long range game for the first time. Some had never shot past 100/200 yards before, however were on target immediately with the guidance of our helpful club members.

600 yards is on the cards next week. Anyone thinking of stretching their rifles legs and going longer range, you can send your enquires through this page or our website.

Happy shooting and hope to see you on the range.

Saturday 11th April saw CRC shooting a club competition shoot at our longest distance, 900 yards.

Many CRC members were away shooting elsewhere on the day. As a result we were very much outnumbered on the firing line by the West Wallsend Rifle Club.

Conditions on the day were quite challenging with moderate winds present throughout the afternoon. Patience and attention to the wind flags were definitely required as regular wind gusts would quickly catch out any shooters who dropped their guard.

The conditions proved especially tough for the 308 Win shooters in F-Standard, with Charlie Prebble coming out on top with 112.02.

Brett Read in Sporter/Hunter dropped a single shot (he's blaming a wind gust and sticking to that excuse) to finish with 99.15.

The standout performance for the day however was Rob Avery in TR, shooting clean (again) with an outstanding 100.15.

Next Saturday will be the beginning of Round 2 of the CRC Club Competition, shooting out to our shortest distance of 300 yards. This would be the perfect time for anyone looking to come visit and shoot with us for the first time. All enquiries can be directed through this page or our website.

Happy shooting and hope to see you on the range.

Saturday 21st March was CRC's first 700 yards comp shoot for the year.

Some rather strange conditions were present on the day with late showers mixing things up even further. Early on, although the flags and mirage were indicating minimal wind, some shooters were finding themselves having to make some large windage adjustments to keep on the target centre. Then in the blink of an eye conditions changed to requiring almost no windage. As a result some shooters found themselves chasing their shots, while others didn't seem affected at all.

John Peters in F-Open seemed to have a handle on the conditions shooting 118.14, including an awesome first stage sub three inch 10 shot group. Jason Bennett was not far behind in second place with 118.04. An honourable mention to one of our younger members Olivia Piddington with a very respectable 116.07

Rob Avery in TR put many of the scoped shooters to shame with an impressive 100.15

Ed Wright took top spot honours in F-Standard, where conditions were especially tough on the 308 Win shooters.

In Sporter/Hunter Steven Read took bragging rights by beating his father Brett for first place by a single V-Bull, 99.11 to 99.10.

On a special note it was very good to see a number of our younger shooters on the firing line on the day, all putting in commendable performances. Hopefully this is a trend that we see continue.

This coming Saturday, CRC will be competing at 800 yards.

Happy shooting and hope to see you on the range.

Saturday, 14th March saw CRC shooting its first 600 yards comp round of the year. Shooters were meet with what appeared to to be relativity benign overcast conditions with a mild breeze. However it was more difficult than it appeared with the breeze changing direction and speed frequently. Despite this some decent scores were attained across the board.

David Piddington only dropped one shot to come out on top in F-Open with a 119.10, with John Peters one point behind on 118.14.

Ed Wright put in a solid performance in F-Standard with 117.8, again showing the 308 Win is still a force.

The 6.5 Creedmoors were out in numbers on the firing line in the Sporter/Hunter with Brett Read taking top spot with 99.14.

The standout performance for the day however was David Avery in F/TR with 116.4, shooting the diminutive 223 Rem. Dave has proven once again that if handled correctly and in the right conditions the 223 can still be competitive.

This Saturday the club with be competing at 700 yards. Also Sunday will see the club shooting an afternoon practise session at 600 yards, commencing after the HDHC's morning shoot.

Happy shooting and hope to see you on the range.

Saturday, 8th March saw CRC shooting it's second comp shoot of the year, at 500 yards. Numbers were a bit lighter than usual, probably due to other shooting activities taking place around the state, with West Wallsend rifle club members out numbering Cessnock on the firing line.

Humidity was the biggest weather factor shooters had to contend with, coupled with very little breeze. Overcast conditions kept the mirage in check however shooters still had to be on their toes with slight changes in the conditions occurring throughout the day.

Rob Avery in TR shot clean as expected, to post a solid 100.15.

Charlie Prebble shot a first stage possible in F-Standard, giving onlookers hope that he might post his first double possible, however conditions proved a bit tricker later in day, posting a final winning score of 115.7.

The father son duo of Brett and Steven Read went head to head against one another in Sporter/Hunter PCO, with Brett coming out on top with a clean 100.16 followed by Steven only one point behind with 99.13.

The star performance of the day was by far Jason Bennett in F-Open, blazing away with an outstanding double possible of 120.14, despite still in the middle of load development. It was very impressive to watch. Tim Nugent followed in second place with a respectable 118.10.

All members be aware there will be no Sunday afternoon practise shoots for the next two weeks due to many of our Range Officer qualified members being away competing at other rifle club events. The next Sunday practise session will be on 22nd March. Our Saturday competition shoots are unaffected.

Happy shooting and hope to see you on the range.

And we are back! This Saturday saw the commencement of the 2026 CRC club comp with our first competition shoot, at 300 yards.

Competitors were met with some tricky conditions with the mild to moderate breeze constantly shifting from left to right. The mirage was also coming and going throughout the day, which helped some and hindered others.

The conditions didn't stop some shooters putting in some excellent personal performances however. Tim Nugent with his new rifle shot a second stage 60.9 with an overall 118.12 in F-Open while Brett Read shot clean in PCO with an overall score of 100.16.

However the real action was in F-Standard where a three way dogfight was on for first place. James Christian and Ed Wright showed that the good old 308 Wi******er is still up to the task, both shooting possibles in one of their stages. CRC's F-Standard cadre is really starting to become competitive with only a single point separating first and third.

F-Standard
James Christian 117.7
Ed Wright 116.11
Charlie Prebble 116.7

Next week will be 500 yard comp shoot. As alway visitors are welcome and can direct any inquires through our website or our page. Happy shooting and hope to see you on the range.
