The last brown trout of the brown trout season. This day was a slow grind with the fish far more interested in pairing up than they were in feeding. With a bit of rain in April, and now a bit more at the start of May, we might actually have fish spawning when they should be spawning for the first time in a few years. Let's hope this closed season is a good one for the trutta.

I definitely had the most unsuccessful end of the trout season for a few years this year. It was a tough day on the water the other day, but I did have a bend in my rod a couple of times. There are still a handful of days to go, so there's still time!

A nice river brown getting a sniff of freedom as releases it to grow larger and wiser. I can't catch fish anymore, apparently, and hence a picture of one of Alex's!

There was a window of a bit over an hour where the trout were rising freely in the long, deep pools of this north-west river. Well presented dries got engulfed pretty consistently until the action died in the mid-morning.

This thumping brown showed himself with a rise, slurping down a dun. In what was very tricky sight fishing conditions, the loud slurp in a quiet pocket of water allowed me to target this fish with an accurate cast. Watching it refuse a real may fly to instead eat my imitation was extra icing on the cake!

A couple of river sessions have been a nice change of scenery over the past week or so. There are just enough fish to keep you on your toes, and the spookiness of the fish demands accurate, quality casts and a PhD in entomology.
