This is a photo of Swanston Street, near Flinders Street Station, from the early 1900s. Can you spot the signs for a certain racecourse?

On a related note, have you ever heard of the notorious ‘race whisperer’? Michael Shelford from Melbourne Historical Crime Tours provides a fascinating overview. Have a read 👇

“A cunning way to make a quid had the old ‘racecourse whisperer’. Get into a conversation with a stranger, inform him that you’re in the know, that you’ve been chatting to a horse owner, a jockey … a stable hand. You tell him there’s a sure thing running in race 5, maybe it’s a rigged race … one of the donkeys has been juiced … or one of the champs has been doped. He gets all excited and plonks 50 quid on the nose. If he wins you go have a chat with him just after he’s collected. He’ll be so happy he’ll give you a tenner for sure, maybe another tenner if you give him a tip for race 6. If he loses, you avoid him at all costs and go catch up with that other fella instead - the one you advised to back a different horse.”

Hi everybody,

Learn more about the Level Crossing Removal Project here: into a Licence Agreement with the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), and their contractors, for their use of the former stables area adjacent to Neerim Road. This is to assist with their removal of two level crossings and will run until December 2023. In the Land Management Plan, a community facility is ultimately proposed for this area.

In making this decision, the Trust has considered:
• The area has been closed to the public public whilst used as horse stables
• The existing buildings and infrastructure make the area unsafe for community usage
• The use of the area by the works teams will both reduce the impacts on the broader community of the LXRP work, and enable the project to proceed in a timely and efficient manner in removing the boom gates for good

In regards to the City of Glen Eira Significant Tree register, the Trust has amended the lease footprint with the MRC to protect a significant tree adjacent to the track near the stables. The remaining significant trees will not be affected by the granting of the licence.

Finally, the income from this agreement will be invested into:
• Community engagement
• Activating the Reserve with a market and community activities.
• Planning for the implementation of the Land Management Plan.
• Stronger advocacy through the appointment of a head of Engagement
• Community infrastructure and access improvements

FROM THE ARCHIVES

This image, from 1981, shows the Queen presenting the Queen Elizabeth Cup to trainer Bob Hoysted and jockey Roy Higgins at Caulfield Racecourse.

Manikato was the name of the prize-winning horse.

Let us know: did you or someone you know manage to catch a glimpse of the Queen on one of her 16 visits to Australia?
