Serious horse owners/riders/trainers: do yourself a favour and watch this amazing episode on YouTube: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1c2KtFSjSr/?mibextid=wwXIfr
Maria Cooke interviews Bent Branderup (Academic Art of Riding) on her YouTube series Inside the Manège (lots of good interviews on there, by the way) and Bent explains so much about lots of the things I bang on about 😂, such as:
- using upper leg and seat aids
- not relying on rein aids
- the importance of rider position/seat/balance
- the importance of creating opportunities for the horse to find their balance and that nothing is ‘correct’ (because it is causing a problem elsewhere in the horse’s body) without that—even rhythm includes balance and tempo, and is a foundation for all else
- letting the horse arrive at being ‘on the bit’ or in self-carriage (because forcing or setting a frame only gets you to false collection and blocks the horse’s back and the hindlimb)
- that a particular ‘method’ will not work for every horse but the appropriate knowledge, feel, and having a good eye can work for all types of horses
- bringing the hindlimb joints towards the center of mass rather than ‘yielding’ with joints placed beyond the position of the body
- being informed by (all of these) the horse in front of you, the classical masters, and modern science
- true bend requires correct spinal rotation
- the relaxation of the horse’s spine in motion being like a fish swimming through water (“fishies” exercises, anyone?!)
and I could go on forever!!!😂 In fact, I already did that, all through lunch at a clinic with the lovely Bettina Biolik (one of Bent’s students and an instructor/trainer in the Academic Art of Riding in her own right) discussing all things biomechanics, lateral movements, and high school dressage. (I did say to Bettina that she could have some quiet time to enjoy her lunch, instead, if she preferred 🤣🤣🤣 but we had a great conversation.💕)
I recommend watching this video on your own, without distractions, and perhaps coming back to it a couple of times. Yes, it is ‘Academic’ but it might just be what helps everything click into place or re-affirm things for you, and perhaps not even now, but at some point in the future.
