Proud moments like this remind me why I love coaching.

These young men bring character, competitiveness, and a genuine team-first mentality every time they step on the field. Traits like that don’t appear by chance, they’re built over years through the influence of many great coaches, mentors, and environments.

Player development is never an individual effort. It’s collective. From the coaches who introduce the game, to those who shape habits, standards, and values along the way.

I want to acknowledge Christian Sergiacomi (Serge), not just for the rugby player development, but for the impact he’s had on these boys as young men. I’m fortunate to be a beneficiary of the values he’s instilled and grateful to lean on his insight as I look to better facilitate their growth and potential.

As coaches, we carry a responsibility - to the game and to the people who play it, to add value, create positive experiences, and leave things better than we found them.

Grateful to Serge, and to all the men and women who give their time, care, and wisdom to grow our great game.

And yes Serge is on his tippy toes 🤣

Confidence isn’t built in front of audiences, it’s built in the quiet hours.
Before training, after training, on your day off when no one’s watching.

I used to measure my worth by performance. If I played well, I belonged. I felt liked. But deep down, I knew it was more than that. Now I know it.

True confidence comes from the work.
It’s not the result, it’s the act.
It’s not what you do, it’s who you are becoming.

If I could offer one gift to young athletes, it’s this:
Learn the art of reframing.
Find pride in the work, not the outcome.
Find belonging in your authenticity, not approval.

And it starts with being present.
Presence is the superpower. Just ask Michael Jordan (The Last Dance 🤌🏼)

My top 3 practices for improving presence:
1. Meditate. Start with 5 mins a day.
2. Ask more questions. Be brave enough to be a student.
3. Remove distractions. Be where your feet are.

Confidence is built in stillness, effort, and truth. That’s where the good stuff lives.

Swipe to see my 9 and his deliberate form from back in 2022. This man was clutch and pivotal with the boot in the Flying Fijians historic win against the Wallabies during the 2023 World Cup.

Grateful for the incredible players and people I’ve crossed paths with and Aaron Cruden is right up there. During my time with the Chiefs, Crudz stood out for so many reasons.

His attention to detail, relentless focus on the micro work-ons, and the way he led not just through words but consistent actions, pure class. Calm, composed, mature beyond his years, and always putting the team first.

What struck me most was his resilience. Beating testicular cancer at 19 and going on to lead with such grace and strength… that’s a real leader. A true Chief.

Crudz, you’re one special man.

First of many caps to come, Sam is a great example to any aspiring player due to his application to the 1%rs, his approach to be better than the day before and his holistic and positive outlook on not just his rugby but life.

Sam embodies total accountability and is a young man I am very grateful to be working with 💪🏼

Behind the Mask of an Elite Athlete

Elite sport demands more than just physical excellence—it demands a mindset of unbreakable strength. But when “mental toughness” becomes a mask, the pressure can be suffocating.

I had access to psychologists, yet opening up felt like admitting weakness. In a world where selection, contracts, and reputation were on the line, silence felt safer. The highs were euphoric, but the lows? Isolating. Injuries, non-selection, and self-doubt pile up, yet we kept pushing, reliance on external validation often a scape goat to hold it all together.

📸 2015: The start of a brutal season a season following countless injury, a place I thought I’d rejuvenate my career. Yet it wasn’t to be… 4 concussions, a broken rib, and surgery looming over arthritic fingers. I was at my lowest, mourning the life I thought I was destined for, my identity so deeply tied to the game I loved. So far from home and loved ones.

📸 2020: Just before the world flipped upside down, I found freedom. I had overcome so much, accepted who I was, and was finally playing with gratitude and presence, embracing the second chance rugby and my body had given me.

📸 2022 The Final Chapter: One last injury ended my professional career. Yet, as disappointing as it was, I felt immense gratitude. Playing for the Fijian Drua, embracing the Fijian way of life, and watching my team fight at Suncorp—on crutches, from the sideline—was evident I had let go.

Elite sport glorifies resilience, but true strength is found in vulnerability. Mental health matters just as much as physical health. To any athlete feeling the weight of expectation—you are more than your performance. You are enough, even when the crowd isn’t cheering.

As I reflect on what made rugby so stimulating, I realise it was the variety, the number of skills to work on, the variety in the gym, on the field, the opposition, the study, the diversity in teammates, coaches and trainers. The mental states, psychology and emotions. No one day was the same and no one skill could ever truly be mastered instead it was the pursuit of mastery that made for such stimulation and desire.

This reflection comes following the opportunity to coach in a variety of disciplines and skills of recent, including the high ball catch.

I look forward to more opportunities to pull from past experiences to help guide the future of our game.
