A few moments from grading day at RKD Karate Castlemaine.

Grading is a chance for students to put their training on the floor and show where they’re at. Kihon, kata, kumite, fitness, focus and plenty of determination.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about showing what you’ve learned, how you’ve developed and being prepared to keep going when things get difficult.

Really pleased with the effort everyone put in on the day.

The journey continues.

Stronger together, on the dojo floor and in life. 🥋❤️

One of the things that makes our Family Guardians class special is that parents don’t have to sit on the sidelines and watch their children train, they get to train with them.

Families learn together, challenge each other, encourage each other and share the satisfaction that comes from achieving something through effort and perseverance.

This family recently had plenty to celebrate, with four well-earned belt promotions! 👏

Karate may be an individual journey, but it’s a pretty special journey to share as a family.

Train together. Learn together. Grow together.

Putting it all together. 🥋

Free sparring gives our students the opportunity to take the techniques and principles they practise in training and apply them in a changing, unpredictable environment.

Distance. Timing. Control. Receiving. Responding.

There is no rehearsed outcome, each student has to read what is happening, adapt and find their own response.

This is Jiyū Kumite: learning to make your karate work when you don’t know what’s coming next. 👊

Learning to receive!

In Tachi Jiyū Kumite, students hold their ground during free fighting rather than moving away from the attack.

By taking away the option to retreat or escape, they are forced to practise, receiving, staying composed under pressure, managing the attack, protecting themselves and finding the opportunity to respond.

It’s not about standing still and getting hit. It’s about learning to remain present when the attack comes to you.

Hold your ground. Receive. Respond.

Building strong foundations... one kick at a time. 🥋

Kicking takes more than flexibility and power. It develops balance, coordination, control and the confidence to keep improving.

At RKD Karate Castlemaine, everyone trains together, each at their own level, each working on the same goal: be better than you were yesterday.

Train. Learn. Grow. 👊

Great breakdown of the foot as a weapon!

Great breakdown of the foot as a weapon!

In karate, the foot is not simply a tool for movement—it is a precise striking instrument that can determine the effectiveness of a technique. Understanding the correct target area helps practitioners develop accuracy, balance, control, and proper body mechanics.

The koshi, or ball of the foot, is commonly used for thrusting and penetrating kicks. It allows the practitioner to transfer body weight efficiently into the target while maintaining stability. The tsumasaki, or tips of the toes, can be used in specialized techniques, but they require excellent conditioning, precision, and control to avoid injury.

The teisoku, or ball and underside area of the foot, can be applied in techniques where a broader contact surface is appropriate. The sokuto, or outer edge of the foot, is important in side kicks and related techniques. Correct alignment of the ankle, knee, hip, and supporting foot is essential for generating power safely.

The kakato, or heel, provides a strong, compact striking surface. It can be used in techniques emphasizing direct impact and body alignment. The haisoku, or instep, is commonly associated with kicks where the top of the foot makes contact. Practitioners must maintain control and avoid unnecessary tension.

The hizagashira, or knee tip, is not a foot target, but it is another important striking surface in karate. A controlled knee technique depends on balance, hip movement, distance, and proper posture.

Knowing these target areas is only the beginning. Effective karate requires more than memorizing names. A skilled practitioner develops timing, distance, precision, speed, balance, and disciplined technique through consistent practice. Every kick should be delivered with control and purpose, followed by a stable recovery position.

Train intelligently, respect your training partner, and prioritize correct technique over raw power. When you understand where and how to make contact, your kicks become more accurate, efficient, and purposeful. In karate, precision is not merely about hitting harder—it is about knowing your target and mastering the technique behind every movement.

Focus. Control. Commitment. 🥋

Karate asks us to be fully present, to move with purpose, stay composed and give our best in the moment.

Every performance is another opportunity to build confidence, sharpen technique and grow through practice.

This is what progress looks like.

A belt is more than a colour. 🥋

It represents the effort already given, the lessons learned, and the responsibility to keep improving.

For our students, receiving a new belt is a moment to be proud of, but it also marks the beginning of the next challenge.

Earn it. Wear it. Grow into it.

08/08/2026

Karate is more than learning techniques. 🥋

It’s having the courage to step forward, give your best and keep going, even when people are watching.

Every grading is a chance to test not only what we’ve learned, but the confidence, focus and determination we’ve built along the way.

That’s growth in action. 👊
