Reading cattle is the first real skill every cutter must develop before worrying about horse work. A rider needs to understand how to identify fresh cattle versus those that have already been worked, how to recognize natural movement in the herd, and how to spot which cows will move freely versus those that may challenge a horse. These small details directly influence every decision made in the pen.
