Moriarty Sports Person of the Month for June is Merle Wortel. Proudly Sponsored by The Canungra Times.

This month, we are proud to celebrate Merle Wortel as Moriarty Sports Person of the Month. Merle has been a dedicated lawn bowls player for many years, demonstrating passion, skill, and unwavering enthusiasm.

Originally a member of Boonah Bowls Club, Merle’s commitment to the sport continued after the club’s closure several years ago, when she and fellow players transferred to Canungra. Her love for lawn bowls has remained steadfast, and her achievements this year are truly inspiring.

Most notably, Merle achieved an impressive milestone by winning this year's Club Championship in the Ladies' Singles event — at the age of 88, and just a month shy of her 89th birthday in October! Her energy and enthusiasm on the greens are contagious, often putting younger players to shame.

Although she was unable to represent Canungra at the District Champion of Club Championships at Club Robina due to a health issue, Merle was more than willing to give it a go, embodying the true spirit of sport.

Everyone in the club was delighted to see Merle claim this year's title. Her dedication and positive attitude serve as an inspiration to us all.

Good news! The newly upgraded carpark on the creekside and dog park is now open, including a disabled parking spot for convenience. If you're bringing your dog to the park, please remember to pick up after them and dispose of the rubbish properly. Also, please note that the fields and recreation areas are not off-leash zone unless you are partaking in training with our leased group during designated hours, your dogs should stay within the fenced dog park area for their safety and to keep everything enjoyable for everyone.

Moriarty Sportsperson of the Month – May 2026 proudly sponsored by The Canungra Times : Rob Cus

Moriarty Park Sportsperson of the month recognises Rob Cus for his dedication, perseverance, and commitment to the exciting world of IGP dog sport.

Rob joined the Scenic Rim Sportsdog Club in 2024, making the transition from the world of conformation showing to IGP—a significant change that required learning an entirely new discipline. Together with his Rottweiler, Storm, Rob embraced the challenge and has worked tirelessly to develop their skills as a team.

Their hard work paid off in April this year when Rob and Storm achieved their first milestone, earning a BH Obedience Title. They are now focused on the next step in their journey as they prepare to compete for their UPr1 title at the club's September trial.

Adding to the excitement, Storm took a short break from training to become a first-time mum to Cora. Now 12 months old, Cora has inherited her mother's enthusiasm and is well into her own training. Rob is currently preparing Cora for her BH title, with the young Rottweiler also expected to make her trial debut in September.

The upcoming trial promises to be a memorable occasion, with Rob handling both Storm and Cora on the same evening—a testament to the countless hours of training, patience, and dedication he has invested in both dogs.

Congratulations to Rob on being named Moriarty Park Sportsperson of the Month. We wish him, Storm, and Cora every success as they continue their IGP journey and look forward to celebrating many more achievements in the future
